Chapter 15: A feud

One concert followed after another. The guys spend more time on planes and in airports then on stage. But they knew it was worth it. The response they got from the audience was overwhelming.

Ana joined Seb and he was glad to have her around. It helped him to take his mind off Sophia. And he knew it wasn’t very fair, but he really enjoyed Ana’s company. They had always been such good friends and nothing had changed that.

Sabrina drove Carlos crazy. She called him ten times a day with new ideas. He was in a real bad mood the last few days and worked it out on anyone who dared to come close.

In the mean time, Urs tried to get to know Bridget better. But she kept him at arms length. She always found an excuse to stay away from him. She didn’t sit next to him on the plane, she sat on the other end of the table during breakfast and dinner, and even in the car she sat far away from him.

One of the last concerts took place in Denver. David was glad to be with his family again. He stayed at his parents while the others were in a hotel in the city.

“I met a girl.” He told his mother.
“You did? That’s great.” Barbra smiled. “Tell me more.”
“She’s American. And from Colorado as well. She works as a teacher in a private school. She’s so nice, Mum.” He beamed.
“What’s her name?” she asked.
“Lorna-Jane Carter.”
“You have got to be kidding me!” Barbra looked angry at him. “Tell me you’re joking.”
“What? What’s wrong?” David frowned.
“Do you have any who she is?”
“Mum, what’s going on? Why are you so mad?” David asked.

“Lorna-Jane Carter is the daughter from our neighbours. The fancy Carter family…” she shook her head.
David shrugged. “So what’s the problem?”
“What’s the problem??? David! They have been trying to get our land for years. I want you to break up with her.” His mother said.
“Break up with her? Never! Maybe you should try to get along with them. What have they done to you anyway?”

“You really don’t want to understand, do you? We owned their land and grounds. We made sure they had a job and had a roof above their heads. And suddenly this rich uncle died, they inherited all his money and bought us out. And now they want our grounds. But I can tell you that they won’t get it. Never! And you and Lorna… Over my dead body!” she yelled.
“Look, mother… I love that girl and I’m not giving her up. And if you can’t live with that… Too bad.” David stated.

“If you’re staying under my roof, you’ll do what I tell you to do.” Barbra said angrily.
“I’m 34 years old. I’m not a child anymore, mother. You cannot tell me what to do. But if that’s the way you feel about this… I’ll just get my bags and leave.”
“If you leave now, you don’t have to come back.” She said.
“If that is what you want.” David went to his room, packed his bag and called a taxi. When he got back down, his parents stood in the hallway.
“David, can’t we talk about this?” Peter asked.
“Mum made her point and I guess you agree with her.” He said.
His father nodded. “I’m sorry, son, but we can’t allow this. It would ruin us.”
“I’m sorry, dad, but I’m not gonna throw away my future for a stupid feud.” He looked at his mother, but she turned around and disappeared in the kitchen.
His father shook his hand. “I’ll try to talk to her.”
“Thanks. Bye dad.” David shook his hand and left.

David checked in and immediately called Lorna when he got to his room.
“David! How are you?” she sounded happy.
“Why didn’t you tell me who you really were?” he asked.
“I…” she sighed. “I wasn’t sure it was you.”
“Well, my mother was very sure about it. We had a huge fight. She wants me to break up with you.” he said.
He heard her gasp. “If that is what you want.” She answered softly.
“That is not what I want. I love you, Lorna and I’m not giving you up.”
“You… love me?” she sounded surprised.
“Yes, I do. And when I get back, we’ll talk about this.” He said seriously.
“We will. I’m sorry, David.” She sighed.
He smiled. “It’s ok. I only wish you were here right now. I could use a hug.”
“Yeah… Me too. David?”
“Yes?”
“I love you too.” She admitted softly.
“I’m glad to hear it. I’ll talk to you soon. Bye, my lady.”
She laughed. “Bye David.”

Chapter 16: Words…

“David?” Urs frowned when he came out of the elevator and saw his friend.
“Yeah… I’m staying here as well.” He said.
“Is everything ok?” Urs asked concerned.
David sighed. “I had an argument with my mother about Lorna-Jane.”

“The car will be here in 10 minutes. I’m already going.” Bridget walked past them, but stopped when she saw David. “David? What are you doing here?”
He sighed. “Don’t ask.”
“Aren’t you coming with us?” Urs asked.
“No. I have some things to do.” She said.
When she walked away, David softly sang. “Oh feelings dove si va se non c’è…“
”Stop it, Miller.” Urs hissed and walked out.

During sound check, Ana stood in the concert hall and watched from a distance. Bridget joined her. “It’s one of the things I enjoy most.” She smiled.
“Why is that?” Ana asked.
“Because it’s much more relaxed. And sometimes they joke around and tease each other.” She shrugged. “And you can imagine that they are singing just for you.”
“I don’t think Urs would mind to sing for you.” Ana said.
Bridget sighed.
“He really likes you. We all see it.” Ana touched her arm. “What are you afraid for?”
“He’s a star, Ana.”
“Hun…” Ana shook her head. “They may be stars when they are performing, but when they are at home they are normal guys.”
“Yeah… I eh… I got some things to do. I’ll see you later.” Bridget smiled, but Ana knew she wasn’t as happy as she pretended to be.

Carlos paced his dressing room, his mobile clutched to his ear.
“I thought we agreed on a small wedding.”
“Darling, don’t spoil it. You know how it important it is to me. I want to show off with you.” Sabrina said. “Don’t you want to be seen with me?”
“Of course I do. It’s just…” he sighed.
“What I’m concerned the whole world should know we are married. But I guess you don’t agree.” She sniffed.
“Querida, please… You know I love you and I want you to be happy.” Carlos said softly.
“Let me invite that magazine then. They pay a lot of money for the pictures.” She insisted.
“Si, but… We don’t need that money.” He said.
Sabrina laughed. “Come on, darling! You can’t be that naïve! If they want to pay, let them. We can do something nice with it. Maybe we can go on a cruise for 3 weeks instead of two!”
“I have to work.” Carlos mumbled.
“You know how I feel about that. I’ll give Simon a call right away. I’ll call you tonight. Bye darling!” she said happily.
“No, don’t call…”

Carlos buried his head in his hands. Why had he been so stupid to propose to her? Yes, he loved her, but lately he had so many doubts. It seemed that marriage was no good for him. First Ulva who run away the night before they were getting married and now a bride from hell.

10 minutes later his mobile rang.
“Simon? … Yes, I know. … I’m sorry. I couldn’t stop her. … Si… Si… I will, Simon. …Bye, Simon.”
He angrily threw a pillow at the door just when Bridget walked in. It hit her straight in the face.
“Bridget! Dios! I’m sorry!” he hurried to her.
“It’s ok. No harm done.” She smiled. “Are you ok?”
“Si…” he sighed. “It’s Sabrina. She wants a wedding with lots of press and I don’t. And she called Simon and told him we were going on honeymoon for a month.”
“I guess he didn’t like that.”
Carlos shook his head. “No. Not at all.”
“If there is anything I can do…” Bridget touched his arm.
“Thanks, but this is something I have to solve myself.” He smiled.
“Ok. I just came to tell you that make up is ready for you.” She said.
“Thank you. I guess I better get dressed first.” He winked.
“Yeah… Everything will be ok eventually, Carlos.” Bridget said before she closed the door.
He sighed. “I hope so… I really hope so!”

“Are you ok?” Seb looked at Ana who sat in the couch in his dressing room.
“Yes. Just a little tired.”
He sat down next to her. “Why don’t you go back to the hotel?”
“I want to see the concert.” She smiled.
“Ok, but if you’re not up to it or you feel bad, go home during the show. Promise?” he stroked her cheek.
“I promise.” She nodded.
Seb kissed her forehead. “I’ll ask Bridget to sit with you;”
“No, Seb. I’ll be fine.” She shook her head.
“I insist.”

The concert was another success. Bridget saw that Carlos and David weren’t themselves, but the audience didn’t seem to notice.
“They are great.” Ana said when the concert finished.
“They sure are. You want me to call you a taxi?” Bridget asked.
Ana shook her head. “No. I’ll wait for the guys. I’m fine, really.”
“If you’re sure…”
“I am. Don’t worry.” Ana smiled.

The girls got backstage and found the guys waiting for them.
“Well done! You guys were amazing!” Bridget gave them all a hug and a kiss on the cheek. When she stood in front of Urs, she hesitated.
“Don’t I get a hug?” he teased.
The others chuckled.
“Stop it.” She said softly.
“Stop what?” he asked seriously and touched her arm to pull her to him.
“Leave me alone! All of you!”
“Bridget!” Urs was about to go after her, but Ana stopped him.
“Give her time, Urs. She likes you, but don’t push it.”
“I guess you’re right.” Urs sighed.

Chapter 17: Turbulence

5 days later they were on their way home again. The American tour had been a huge success, but the guys were happy to go home again.

David hadn’t spoken to his mother since their fight. His dad had tried to talk to her, but it was no use. She wouldn’t change her mind. He felt really bad about it, but he wasn’t giving up on Lorna. He felt she was the one for him. The one he had been waiting for all his life.

During the flight, Urs felt the plane shaking. He sighed. Turbulence. The fasten seatbelts was turned on, and the flight attendants put away their carts. He felt his stomach rumble, but he knew lunch wouldn’t be served for a while.

He heard Bridget gasp and when he looked at her, he saw she was terrified. He quickly opened his seatbelt and sat down next to her.
She looked up in panic. “What’s happening?”
“It’s just turbulence.” He said soothing. He pushed away her trembling hands and attached her seatbelt. “There you go.”
“I want out.” She panicked.
Urs flipped up the elbow-rest and pulled her in his arms. “It’s ok, sweetie. There is nothing to worry about.”
He felt her tremble in his arms while he softly stroked her hair. “I’m here, sweetie. You’ll be fine.”

The plane finally settled down and she looked at him. “I’m sorry. I feel so ashamed.”
Urs caressed her cheek. “It’s ok. Everyone gets scared sometimes.”
For a moment they looked at each other. Urs slowly dipped his head and his lips touched hers. He felt her breath in, but then she returned his kiss. He pulled her closer and deepened the kiss.

Suddenly Bridget pulled back, blushing furiously. “I’m sorry.”
“I’m not.” Urs smiled.
“Urs, please… I can’t do this. I…” she shook her head.
“Don’t you trust me?” he asked softly.
Bridget looked at him. “I do, but… Like I told you... We are so different and… Please, Urs, don’t push me.”
“And like I told you… I can wait.” He squeezed her hand. “I’m not giving up yet.”

Ana touched Seb’s arm. “I’m not feeling well.”
He looked at her pale face. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t know. I feel dizzy and my stomach is a bit upset.” She swallowed.
Seb felt her forehead. “Chérie, you’re burning!”
“Yeah… I’m a little hot.” She said.
Seb gently pulled her in his arms. “I’ll call a doctor the minute we get home.”
“I’m scared, Seb.” She whispered.
“I know. But I’m with you. All the way.” He held her tight. Her tears seeped through his shirt.
Seb closed his eyes. He prayed that he would be able to support her. He was gonna need all the support he could get.

When they finally arrived, Seb quickly gathered their luggage and rushed out of the airport. He called the doctor while they were on their way home. Ana sat in the car, her eyes closed, shaking and sweating. Seb bit his lip. He hated it to see her like that.

David called Lorna from the car.
“Hi babe!”
“David! You’re back!” she said happily.
“I sure am! Can we meet later on?” he asked.
“Of course! Why don’t you come over here? I’ll cook dinner. I guess you don’t have much at home.”
He grinned. “No… My fridge will be empty. So, yes please… Would 7h suit you?”
“Perfect. I’ll see you then. Bye David!” she smiled.
“Bye Hun.”

“Querida?” Carlos walked into their living room and found Ulva on her knees, sorting out pictures. For a minute he stared at her. He had to fight the urge to pull her in his arms and kiss her like there was no tomorrow. “What are you doing here?”
“What does it look like? I’m planning your wedding!” she snapped.
Carlos raised an eyebrow.
“I’m sorry… Your fiancée is… driving me crazy!” she sighed.
“That makes two of us then.” He grinned.
“Carlos… do you love her?” she bit her lip.
He shrugged. “I care a lot about her.”
“But do you love her?” Ulva insisted.
“I…”

“Darling! You’re home!” Sabrina hugged him and gave him a quick peck on the lips. “Here you go, Ulva. This is the cake I want.” She handed her a picture and sat down on the floor to look through some magazines. “Or this one… What do you think?”
Ulva sighed and turned her attention back to Sabrina. Carlos picked up his suitcase and quietly left the room. He thought about Ulva’s words. Did he love Sabrina?

Bridget had suggested she would go with Seb and Ana, but Seb had assured her it wasn’t necessary. He promised to call her if something was wrong.
Urs dropped her off at home. When she wanted to open the door, he stopped her. “Don’t I get a kiss?”
“Urs please…”
“I know you liked it. You kissed me back.” He grinned.
Bridget shook her head. “It was the altitude and the fact that I thought I was going to die.”
Urs smirked and gave her a blinky wink.

“You are impossible, Bühler! Stay away from me!”
“Tell me you don’t care for me. Tell me you don’t love me and I’ll leave you alone.” He insisted.
A sob escaped her and she opened the door. She angrily took her stuff from the trunk and ran up the stairs to the house.
Urs smiled. He knew he had a point.

When Urs unloaded the trunk at his apartment, he found Bridget’s laptop. He quickly put his stuff inside and drove back to her house. When he rang the bell, he heard loud music. A man opened. “Yes?”
“Hi. I’m Urs. Bridget forgot her laptop in my car.” He said.
“Bridget?”
He was pushed aside by a young woman. “You go back. I’ll take care of it.” She smiled at Urs. “Hi, I’m Ingrid.”
“Hi, Ingrid.” He gave her the laptop. “Bridget forgot this in my car and I figured she needed it.”
Ingrid nodded. “Yes, thanks. She’s taking a shower. I’ll make sure she gets it.”
“Ok, thanks. Well ehm… Bye.”
“Bye Urs.”

Ingrid closed the door and pulled out her mobile. “Bridget? Urs was here. You forgot your laptop in his car. … Ok, I will. … See you soon.”

Chapter 18: Home again

Seb paced the living room. The doctor was with Ana and had asked him to wait outside. It looked like it was taking him hours before he got out again.

The doctor finally came out and Seb saw it was serious.
“The trip hasn’t done her good. She’s exhausted.” The doctor said.
“I understand.” Seb nodded. “But that fever…”
“Her body is very weak. If she catches a cold or a virus or something…” he hesitated. “It’s possible that she won’t make it.”
Seb gasped. “But they said she had 6 months!”

“At the most. I’m sorry, Mr Izambard, but I don’t think she will be here much longer. 1 month… 2 months at the most.” The doctor looked at him. “We can take her to hospital, but she doesn’t want that. Maybe you can hire a nurse…”
Seb shook his head. “Non. I’ll take care of her myself.”
“You can call me day and night.” The doctor said.
“Thank you.” Seb led him out and went to check on Ana.

She smiled when he came in. “I’m a pain in the ass eh?”
“Non, Chérie.” Seb sat down next to her. “Nothing like that. Are you feeling better?”
“Yes. The doctor gave me something. Seb…” she bit her lip.
He stroked her cheek. “What is it, Chérie?”
“I don’t want to die in hospital. Let me die here, please.”
Seb swallowed and took her in his arms. “Of course. Anything you want.”
“I’m so scared.” She softly sobbed.
“I’ll be with you, Chérie. Till the end.” Seb held her till she cried herself asleep.

Lorna opened the door to her apartment and immediately hugged David. “I’m so glad you’re back!”
“So am I.” he held her tight and kissed the top of her head.
“Come in. Dinner is almost ready.”
David handed her a bouquet of red roses. “A little something.”
“Oh David. You shouldn’t have. But they are beautiful!” she inhaled the scent.
“Just like you.” David squeezed her hand.

He whistled when he walked into the dining room. Soft music was playing and candles were lit. “You sure put in an effort.”
She shrugged. “It’s no big deal.”
“And you look amazing.” He took her hand and kissed it.

Lorna blushed. She had been busy all day because she wanted everything to be perfect. Her blue dress matched her eyes. And she had put on just a little bit of make up to enhance her features.
She handed him a bottle of champagne. “Here, why don’t you open it?”
“It would be my pleasure, my lady.” He winked.

During dinner they talked about the tour.
“Have you talked to your mother since the fight?” Lorna asked.
He sighed. “No, she doesn’t want to talk to me.”
“I’m sorry, David. I don’t want you to fight with her. Maybe we should…” she lowered her eyes.

“Don’t even think about it!” he stood up and kneeled down next to her. “I love you, Lorna. I know it’s crazy and I hardly know you, but… What I feel for you is so strong. So real. Don’t give up on us, please.”

“She’s your mother, David. And I don’t want to be the reason of a fight.” She quietly said.
David gently hugged her. “You’re not. If she can’t accept the one I love…” he shrugged. “It’s her loss.”
“David…”
He claimed her mouth and Lorna gave in to him.
“Let’s go to the bedroom.” She whispered while she stood up.

David grinned when he saw the satin sheets. “You had this all planned.”
“Well… maybe just a little.” Lorna kissed him softly. “I love you, David.”
“I love you too.” Words were no longer necessary. Their lovemaking was sweet and passionate.

Afterwards they lay in each others hands. Lorna’s fingers stroked his chest.
“I still can’t believe that a lady fell in love with me.” He whispered.
“Will you stop that! I’m not a lady. I’m just a normal girl.” She said.
“My girl…”
She smiled. “That’s right… Your girl.”

Chapter 19: Secrets

“Good morning!” David happily greeted the others.
“Morning David.” Urs nodded.
Seb just starred in front of him and Carlos mumbled something.
“Morning, Mr Miller. It’s not like you to be late.” Simon teased.
“No, but… I had an amazing night.” He grinned.

“Morning, David. You want coffee?” Bridget asked, walking in with a tray.
“Yes, please!”
The guys got themselves a cup of coffee and when they were finally seated, Simon looked at them.
“I’m proud of you guys. The American tour was a huge success. The press praises you and the audience…” He grinned. “Well, you saw how they reacted.”
“Yeah… It was great!” David nodded.

“The next month you guys will be doing some TV shows, photo shoots, appearances,… Go down to PR when we are finished here. They have the schedule.” Simon said, looking through his papers. “Oh yes… Sunday, on Mothers’ day, you will be performing at the Sacred Heart Institution. It’s a home for people with Alzheimer.”

Bridget dropped her cup. They all looked at her.
“I… I’m sorry…” she quickly stood up. “I’ll clean it up.”
Urs looked at her wile she rushed out. Something wasn’t right.

“Simon… I need a huge favour.” Seb quietly said.
“Go on…”
“Ana is not doing well. The doctor gave her a month. Maybe two. I… I need to be with her.” He bit his lip.
Simon nodded. “I understand. I won’t ask you to go to every interview. But I need you to be at the performances.”
“Of course. Merci.” Seb nodded.
“Is there anything else we can do? Maybe I can hire you a nurse for when you’re not around.” Simon suggested.
Seb hesitated. “I don’t know…”
“You can’t be with her 24h a day.” Simon said gently.
“Do you know someone?” Seb asked.
“Bridget, can you take care of that?” Simon asked.
“Yeah…sure…” she said quietly.

Urs saw something was wrong. He didn’t know what it was, but ever since Simon mentioned Mother’s day she had been upset.

The guys spend the rest of the day in the PR department. They were all tired when they were finally allowed to go home.
Urs went to Bridget’s office. She was working on her computer and looked up when Urs walked in.
“Hi.”
“Can I give you a ride home?” he asked.
“I have to finish this. Don’t worry about it. I’ll take the underground.” She said.
“I’ll wait. I don’t mind.” He sat down on the couch against the wall and took a magazine from the coffee table.

Bridget glanced at him. He smiled while he was reading. His long legs were stretched out in front of him and he looked very relaxed.
“You’re never gonna get finished if you keep looking at me.” His eyes met hers and she blushed furiously when she turned back to her computer screen.

Urs grinned. He knew she liked him and that their kiss hadn’t left her indifferent. The way she had reacted to it, told him everything. She liked him. There was no doubt about it.

“Done.” Bridget said half an hour later.
Urs stood up and took her coat. “Great. Let’s go then.”
He helped her in her coat and Bridget felt the heat of his hands through the fabric. “Thanks.” She mumbled.

When they left the building, they ran into Mike. “Bridget, I thought you were coming for a drink with us?”
She sighed. “I’m sorry, Mike. It’s been a long day. Another time, ok?”
“Yeah…Whatever…” he angrily strolled off. Urs frowned, but Bridget pretended she hadn’t noticed.

They didn’t speak on the way home. Urs turned of the engine when he stood in front of her house and turned to her.
“Bridget, can I take you out to dinner one of these days?”
“What? Why?” she asked surprised.
“Because I like you. And I know you like me too.” He said gently.
She shook her head. “Urs, please…”
“Just dinner. Nothing more.” He took her hand.
“I don’t think…”
“Just say yes. If you don’t like it, I’ll leave you alone afterwards.” He said.
“Promise?”
“I promise.” He nodded.
“Ok.” She quietly answered.
“Great!” Urs smiled. “How about tomorrow?”
She shrugged. “Sure.”

Just then Urs’ mobile rang. “It’s my mother. I’ll call you tomorrow for the details.”
“Ok. Bye.” She got out and sprinted up the stairs.
Urs smiled when he answered his phone. “Mutti!”

After about half a minute, he noticed something in his rear mirror. Bridget came down and walked away in the opposite direction.
“Mutti… I’ll call you back.” Urs turned his car and slowly followed her from a distance. He felt something wasn’t right.

Chapter 20: Hiding

Urs stopped in front of the old building. Bridget had gone in there. Was she just dropping something off? He waited, but after fifteen minutes he decided to take a look inside.
He looked up and couldn’t imagine how someone could live there. The building looked like it was gone collapse soon. The front door was on a crack. Urs walked in and looked at the mailboxes. He couldn’t believe his eyes. ‘Bridget Mason - Apartment 306’.

He looked around for the elevator but he didn’t see one. Urs went up the stairs and couldn’t believe what he saw there. Electricity wires were hanging loose from the wall. Paint and wallpaper seemed old or non existent and there were large pools of water on the floor. People were yelling, children crying, loud music was being played.

He came to the apartment and knocked. Bridget opened and looked at him as if she saw a ghost. “Urs? What are you doing here?”
“Why did you lie to me?” he asked, looking intently at her.
“I…”
Just then her drunken neighbour stumbled out. “Bri… My darling… Are you cheating on me?”
She took Urs’ arm. “You better come in.”

Urs looked at the small chamber. It was clean, but that was it. There was a table with two chairs, a sofa, a bed and a small kitchen. He saw a door in the corner, probably leading to the bathroom.
“Is Simon paying you that little?” he asked and turned around to face her.
“No.”
“Then why...?”
She looked at her feet. “So, you’re gonna judge me because of this?”
He tilted her chin with a finger. “No, I’m not. But please, explain it to me.”

She sighed and sat down on the sofa. Urs sat down next to her and took her hand. “Do you trust me?”
She looked at him. “Of course I do.”
“Tell me what’s going on then. Why do you live here?”
“Because it’s all I can afford.” She softly said.
“But…”
“Promise me you won’t tell the others.” She said.
Urs hesitated. “I don’t know. I…”
“Please Urs!” He saw the fear in her eyes.
“Ok.” He nodded.

“My mother has got Alzheimer. She’s in an institution. All my money goes there.”
“Alzheimer… But that’s something old people have…” he looked at her.
“Yeah… Are you sure you want to know about it?”
“Yes, I do.” He said, gently squeezing her hand.

Bridget stood up and walked to the window.
“When I was about 16, my mum started to forget things. Shopping, picking me up at school, dentist appointments… She said it was because she had so much on her mind and was working so hard. But it only got worse. After a few months I finally convinced her to go see a doctor. He did all kinds of test and the diagnosis was very hard to take. When he said it was Alzheimer, I couldn’t believe him. Old people were supposed to get it, not my mother. She was only 34 at the time.”
“34?” Urs sounded surprised.

Bridget nodded. “She was barely 18 when I was born. Anyway… He gave her medication, but it didn’t really work. Things started to get worse. By the time I was 18, I could barely leave her on her own. I came home one evening and found the back door wide open, the stove was turned on and my mother nowhere to be seen. I panicked and searched the neighbourhood but I couldn’t find her.”

She clutched her hands. “Hours later the police brought her home. They found on her on the Highway. She didn’t know where she was or where she was going. And that’s when I realised that I couldn’t deal with her on my own. The day after I graduated, I started working with Simon. I sold our house, rented this place and brought my mother to an institution. And she still lives there.”

Urs didn’t know what to say. He stood up and walked towards her, gently placing his hands on her shoulders.
“How is she now?” he asked concerned.
Bridget sighed. “She has good days, but usually she doesn’t even recognise me. She thinks I’m her sister or a neighbour. Or that I work there.”
“I’m sorry. It must be hard.”
She nodded. “It is.”
“What about your father?” Urs wanted to know.
“He left us before I was born. I don’t even know who he is.” She shrugged.

“I’m sorry, Sweetie.” Urs turned her around so that he could look at her. “That house where I dropped you off…”
“Ingrid, my friend lives there. And my mail comes there. She doesn’t mind.” Bridget said.
“Can’t you stay with her?”
She shook her head. “I don’t want to be a charity case. I can manage. I don’t need a luxurious house. I’m perfectly happy here.”

“Come with me. I have a spare room.” Urs said.
“No.” Bridget turned around again and looked outside, into the dark night. “I’m fine. I don’t want pity.”
“It’s not pity. I’m concerned. This place is dangerous.” He stated.
“I can manage. I always did.” She looked at him. “Please don’t tell this to anyone.”
He sighed. He knew there was no way that she would give in. “On one condition…”
“What’s that?”
“That you let me be part of your life.” He said softly. “I want to take care of you. Get to know you…”
“Urs…”
“I’m not doing this out of pity, Bridget. I care for you. I… I’m in love with you.” He caressed her cheek.
“Oh Urs…” she hugged him. She needed to feel him. “I’m in love with you too.” She whispered against his chest.

Urs held her tight, a smile on his lips. After a while he raised her chin and his lips gently touched hers. She gave in to him. The soft kisses and his warm body made her feel so good. But after a while she pulled back.

“We can’t do this.”
“Why not?” Urs frowned.
“What if… What if I have the same as my mother?” She bit her lip.
Urs held her close. “We’ll deal with it when it comes to that. IF it comes to that. And we can take it slow if you like. I’ve got time.”
“Thank you.” She said.
“Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?” he asked.
Bridget shook her head. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. Really.”
“I guess I can’t convince you. But promise me that you call me if you need anything. No matter what, no matter when. Ok?” he looked intently at her.
“I will.” She kissed him again. “Thanks for being so understanding.”
“You’re welcome. Well… I better go then.” He gave her one last kiss. “Bye sweetheart.”
“Bye, Urs.”

Chapter 21: Fate

Sophia was on her way home when her phone rang. “Hello? … Hi Tom. … What??? … Oh God… Yes, I’m on my way!”

She quickly hailed a taxi and drove to the hospital. Her mind was going crazy when she thought about Tom’s phone call. Her dad collapsed during a meeting. It couldn’t be. She couldn’t loose him.

They got to the hospital in no time and she ran in. Tom stood in the hallway and stopped her. “He’s ok. Don’t worry.”
“What happened? What’s wrong with him? Where is he?” she looked bewildered.
Tom put his hands on her shoulders. “Calm down, Sophia. It’s not good for him to see you like this.”
“Tell me what’s wrong with him!” she yelled.
“He collapsed. That’s all I know. The doctors did some tests, so you’ll have to wait till they know more.” He looked at her. “You want to go see him?”
“Of course I do!” she snapped. But then she sighed. “I’m sorry, I…”
“It’s ok. I know you’re worried. Come on, I’ll take you to him.” Tom took her hand and brought her to the second floor.

Sophia gasped when she came in the room. Her father looked so pale.
“Daddy!”
He opened his eyes and smiled at her. “Hi sweetheart.”
“What’s wrong with you? I was so worried!” she hugged him.
He patted on the bed. “Sit down. I have to tell you something, Sweetie.”
“You’re scaring me.” She said, taking his hand.

“Sophia, I didn’t tell you before, but…I’m dying, Sweetheart. I have lung cancer.”
“What? No… Daddy… It can’t be.” She shook her head.
“And before you ask… I didn’t tell you because you'd worry and you would have made me get the chemo. But I didn't want to prolong the inevitable.” He coughed. “I'm dying, Honey. My right lung is totally collapsed, it's useless.” Jefferey gasped for air and Sophia squeezed his hand. Tears appeared in her eyes.
“Daddy…”

“The doctor is putting me on full oxygen in a bit and I don't want you arguing with anything I've told the doctor, baby. I’m okay, as long as I know that you're taken care of sweetie. It's been just the two of us for so long... But you'll be okay because I want you to marry Tom.”
“What? No…” Sophia shook her head.
He smiled. “Listen to me, while I can still talk.”
Jefferey coughed again. Sophia panicked when his lips turned blue and she pushed the nurses’ button.

He calmed down a little and took her hand again. “Marry Tom. He loves you and he'll be good for you. Together you can merge our company with his. And you'll be happy. I know in my heart you'll be happy.”
Sophia shook her head. “Daddy, you can't be saying this. You need to fight for me. Please don't leave me alone.”
Jefferey looked in her eyes and shook his head. "Honey, you look so much like your mother. So pretty and I don't want you to be alone. Marry Tom for me. It's my dying wish. Please don't go against me."
“I won't daddy. If you want me to marry Tom, I'll do it. Just don't die. Please, just don't die.” Sophia sobbed.

He coughed again. One of the nurses came in and gave him a shot of Demerol. Within seconds he calmed down and fell asleep.
A doctor came in and looked at Sophia. “Ms Garner, your father is suffering from cancer. He's known of this for four months. We gave him three to live. He exceeded our expectations and he knows it. He signed a DNR form and also was admitted into hospice last month, which means that we aren't going to try any life saving methods. We'll give him oxygen to be comfortable and pain medication to help him rest, but he won't last the week. I'm sorry Ms Garner, I really am. Is there anything I can do for you?”

Sophia sniffed and nodded. “Give my Dad new lungs."
Just then Tom came in. His heart broke at the sight of the crying Sophia. He gently hugged her. "Soph, I know you hurt so much for your Daddy. I'm here for you. I won't ever let you be alone.”
She hugged him tight and sighed. “Do you know what he asked?”
Tom pulled back and looked her in the eyes. “To marry me."

Sophia nodded.
"We were talking about that this morning. I love you Sophie. I loved you before I meet you. Your dad would talk about you and I fell for you then. Seeing you and feeling this attraction that I do is a bonus I never expected.” He said softly.
She sighed. “This is too much Tom. I need time.”

Sophia looked at her father. He was resting peacefully. Monitors were beeping and he had an oxygen mask on and a C2 measurer on his finger.
“Oh Daddy… What am I gonna do without you?” Sophia softly wept into the blanket covering her father, her hand gripping his as she tried to deal with the news that was overwhelming.

Her mother had run off with the pool man when she'd still been in diapers and her father had been her one constant in life. He'd moved aside business meetings and always made time for his princess. And now her daddy was dying and he wanted her to marry Tom. She looked over at him, sitting stiffly in the chair opposite her. His head was buried in his hands and he seemed to genuinely care about her father and her.

Should she marry him and make her father happy? Seb wasn't around and he was married anyways. And she didn't want to be like her mother, for the cabana boy she'd run off with had been married leaving his wife. She couldn't be responsible for a broken marriage.

Sophia wiped the tears from her eyes, not caring that her mascara had run, making her look very much like a racoon. She'd do this for her father. It was his wish to have her married and she didn't want to be alone.

"Tom, how soon can you arrange everything?" Sophia asked finally. It had seemed like only minutes had passed since she'd first gotten the call, but in fact it had been hours since that had happened.
"Sophie, are you sure? This is a big step and I just want you to be happy, darling." Tom asked, standing up and walking over to where Sophia remained seated.
She nodded. "Yes, I'm sure, Tom."
Seeing the seriousness in her eyes, he kneeled down on his left knee.
"Tom, you don't have to do this?" Sophie asked and he gently shushed her by placing a finger over her open mouth.

“Yes I do. I want to be able to tell our children that I got down on one knee. It might not be the most ideal time or place, but I do love you, Sophia.” He said. “And it would make me the happiest and most blessed man, if you would become my wife." He stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out the ring. The lighting in the room was horrible, but Sophia could see that he'd thought this through enough to have bought a ring for her and he'd been carrying it around in the pocket near his heart.

Sophia chocked up for the second time and couldn't answer his proposal until she felt her hand being squeezed.
"Sophia, what do you say to the man?" her father asked, a gentle smile on his face and a look of ease for the first time all day.
"Tom, I accept." she whispered and leaned over to kiss him.
When their lips touched, she felt the spark. She knew everything was going to be alright. The warmth of his lips and the soft touch of his hand on her cheek, made her feel safe. Safe and loved.

Chapter 22: A day of love

Seb traced Sophia’s face on the picture with his finger. He clearly remembered that evening. They had gone to the boardwalk and she had dragged him into a photo booth. He smiled when he thought how they had laughed. Sophia sat on his lap and made silly faces to the camera. There was one picture of them kissing and on the last one they had their arms around each other and smiled. She looked so happy. And in love.

Seb felt his heart tug. He had fallen so hard for her. Never had he experienced something like that. That was one of the reasons he married Ana. Because he thought he would never find someone he could really love.
He heard Ana stir and quickly put the pictures in his sock drawer.

“Seb?”
“Oui Chérie.” He sat down on the bed and smiled at her. “Did you sleep well?”
She nodded. “Yes. I feel much better.”
“Good. I made breakfast.” He stroked her cheek. “At least you got some colour again.”
“Yeah… Do you mind if I take a shower first?”
“Of course not.” Seb stood up and held her bathrobe up. “Here you go.”
“You’re such a gentleman.” Ana stood on her toes and kissed him softly on the lips.

For the first time all week Jefferey felt well enough to get out of bed. He knew his daughter wanted a simple wedding, with no fan fare, but it wasn't everyday that your daughter got married, so he'd had Magda his assistant for 10 years, arranged for her dress to be bought and taken as a surprise to the hospital.

When Sophia arrived at the hospital that morning, she was wearing a simple ivory linen suit with her hair swept up in a bun. It shocked her to see her father already up from his bed and dressed in a black suit, blue shirt and tie.

"I have to walk my daughter down the aisle." Jefferey said when words failed Sophia. “Honey, I have a surprise for you. Just go with Magda. I'll be fine." He kissed her temple and sat down in the comfortable lounge chair, his tank of oxygen close at hand.

Sophia wanted to stay with her father but knew better than to argue with him, so she followed Magda down a private corridor to a large conference room. Inside were a stylist and her best friend. He'd flown her best friend in from New York to be with her today. Nohemi stood there, her arms open as Sophia ran to her for a hug and a good cry. There were no words that they said, they weren't necessary.

Sophia sat there quietly as her hair and make up were done, and when Magda showed her the dress, she had a hard time keeping her tears in. Her father had thought of everything, including the pearls that had belonged to her grandmother and every female born a Garner for the past 100 years.

Sophia stood there, shaking as Magda and Nohemi lead her to the chapel.
"Magda, isn't the wedding in my father's room?" Sophia asked confused.
“No, sweetheart. Your father wanted you to have a real wedding.” Magda smiled.

"You look beautiful, sweetheart." Jefferey told his daughter, when she arrived at the chapel.
"Thanks Daddy," Sophia responded and hugged him tight as he held her hand.
The music started, the traditional wedding march, and Sophia walked the small aisle with her father slowly. They stopped once as he rested and took in the oxygen from his tank, but it was the fact that he was with her that mattered to Sophia.

Tom stood at the end of the aisle, next to the justice of the peace, looking quiet handsome in his gray pinstripe suit. He seemed to be moving from side to side, anxious or nervous, Sophia wasn't sure, but she felt calm for the first time all day.

When they reached Tom, Jefferey handed her hand to Tom's and kissed her on both temples. "I love you Sophia."
The simple words meant the world to her as Tom smiled down at her. She was making her Dad happy, it was his dying wish.

Sophia stood there, hearing the words, repeating the vows, watching as Tom did the same. She felt the ring being placed on her finger, the one that symbolized love and eternity and she slipped the ring on Tom's finger. It all happened as if on slow speed and she found herself shocked to know the ceremony was over. It wasn't that she wasn't happy, she just couldn't believe that she'd gotten married.

The kiss was a quick kiss. One that was hinting of passion and promises, promises and passion that would have to be put on hold while Sophia straightened out her feelings.
"A dance" Jefferey announced from his seat and Tom smiled obligingly, "Yes, a dance would be nice." and Sophia heard the music begin.

Maybe it's intuition
But some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
And there it goes
I think I've found my best friend
I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There's just no rhyme or reason
Only this sense of completion
And in your eyes
I see the missing pieces
I'm searching for
I think I've found my way home

I know that it might sound more than a little crazy
But I believe

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(add the whos here)

A thousand angels dance around you
I am complete now that I've found you
(and the whos here)

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
(and the whos here)

For Tom the words were perfect, he loved her since the moment Jefferey told him about her, and now they were married. Sophia leaned her head on his shoulder, not really believing any of it was real. She closed her eyes as he whispers along to the song. She began to sing too when she remembered the song, and felt it in her heart.

The song finished and Tom smiled down at her. Sophia got lost in his green eyes and thought of another pair of green eyes, wondering what he would be doing at that very same moment.
She shook herself out of her dream. He was married.
She looked up when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Her dad was standing there, a huge smile on his face. "A song with me?" he asked and Tom graciously bowed out.

The music started and Sophia heard the song her Daddy loved so much.

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each others face
So much in love your alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world
I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
And she still means the world to me
Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful women with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

Sophia started to cry and so was her dad. She hugged him tight.
"You make me so proud, Sophia. Remember I'll always be with you and love you." He whispered. Jefferey kissed her temple and led her to the wedding cake. She and Tom cut it together and he fed her little bits.

After the cake, Jeffrey shooed them out of the hospital. "I'll be fine, go and rest. You can come see me tomorrow." he said and Tom took Sophia to his condo.

Chapter 23: Loving you

Sophia took a shower and changed into her regular clothes. She walked into the kitchen where Tom was making dinner.
“I thought you might be hungry.” He smiled.
She was about to answer him when her phone rang. “Hello? … Oh God… I’m on my way!”

“Sophia?” Tom saw her pale face.
“My dad… It’s not good… I have to go…” she looked around for her purse and keys, tears blinding her.
Tom put an arm around her waist and led her to his car. “It’s ok, Sweetheart. I’ll take you.”

The doctor waited for them when they arrived. “Ms Garner, I’m afraid he has taken a turn for the worse. I think you should prepare yourself to say goodbye.”
Sophia gasped and felt Tom tighten his grip. “I’m here, sweetie.”

It was a long night. The room was silent, except for the beeping of the machines. Sophia sat in Tom’s lap, holding her dad’s hand. In the early hours of morning, Jefferey took his last breath. Sophia felt him slip away. “Bye Daddy. I love you.”

Tom held her while she cried silently against his chest. His strong arms held her close to him. He made all the arrangements and took Sophia back to his condo. He tucked her in bed and stayed with her while she cried herself to sleep.

Hours later, Sophia woke up. She saw Tom sitting in a chair by her bed, fast asleep. She realised that he loved her. Really loved her, and she knew she had to accept it.
Silently, she got out of bed and softly kissed his lips.
Tom opened his eyes and smiled sleepily. “Hi sweetheart.”

She kissed him again and put her arms around his neck. Her body pressed against his.
“Sophia…” he whispered, looking intently at her.
“Make love to me, Tom. I need you. I… I love you…” She kept looking at him, her eyes telling him what he needed to know.

He stood up and gently lay her on the bed. “Are you sure?”
She nodded, her hands slipping under his t-shirt. “Yes.”
Tom kissed her softly. Sophia hungrily answered his kiss. She welcomed him in, their tongues dancing around each other. They tenderly undressed each other and when Tom was about to take the final step, she stopped him.
“You’re my first, Tom.”

For a minute he was taken aback. But then he kissed her. “We’ve got time.”
Never in her life had Sophia felt like he made her feel. He brought her to heaven, making her feel things she never felt before.

She contently lay in his arms afterwards. Her fingers stroked his chest. “Thank you for being so gentle.”
Tom kissed her forehead. “I love you, Sophia.”

Ana tossed in bed. She couldn’t sleep. Her mind was going crazy and her thoughts made it impossible for her to fall asleep. In the end she got up and went to the living room. The lights were dimmed and Seb was reading a book. He looked up when he heard her.
“Can’t you sleep?”

Ana shook her head and swallowed. She knew that she could blow everything between them, but she had to do it. She stood in front of him and took his hands. “Seb… Will you… Make love to me?”
“What?” he looked surprised.
She bit her lip. “I… I want to feel loved one last time, Seb. I want to feel like a woman.”

Seb saw the tears in her eyes and slowly stood up. “Ana… I don’t know what to say…”
“I understand.” She said softly and was about to turn around, but Seb stopped her. “Wait.” He looked in her eyes, looking for any kind of doubts. “Are you sure?” he asked softly.
She nodded. “We’ve always been friends, but… I don’t know… I think I always had feelings for you. And maybe I’m ruining our friendship, but… I won’t be here much longer anyway, so…”

A sob escaped her. Seb gently took her in his arms and held her close. “Oh Chérie…”
“I’m sorry. I…”
Seb gently raised her chin and kissed her softly. The touch of her lips made him feel things he hadn’t felt in a while. He pulled her body close to his and deepened the kiss. His tongue found hers and he heard her moan.

He took her in his arms and carried her to the bedroom. That night Seb loved her, gently and tenderly. She fell asleep, feeling content. Seb lay awake for hours. He thought about Sophia and how she looked at him when he told her he was married. He had hurt her and he felt so guilty about it.

He whished things were different. It should be Sophia in his arms, not Ana. But maybe she would be there soon. After Ana… The thought escaped his mind and he immediately felt bad. Of course he didn’t want Ana to die! She was his best friend and he cared for her. But he loved Sophia. Would he ever see her again? And could he ever make it up to her?

The thoughts lingered in his mind, as he tossed and turned. The sheets were tangled around his knees and he didn't notice as he thought of all that he wanted to do to Sophia. Not just hold her, although at the moment he'd be content with that, he wanted more. He needed more.

Ana turned to him in her sleep, her fingers grazing low on his abdomen making him acutely aware of his condition and the fact that he hadn't bothered to put on anything after loving Ana, and neither had she.

He looked down at the woman in his arms and thought of another. Did that make him a hypocrite? A liar? A cheat? If not, then what was he? He wished there was someone in whom he could confide this awful secret. Carrying a love that couldn't be shared was tearing him up.

Ana moved again and Seb looked down and saw that she was no longer asleep, instead she was staring down at him and blushed when he caught her looking.

"I... I…" she stammered and Seb understood. He needed relief and Ana needed to be loved. He wasn't ashamed this time as he swept her up in a kiss that left nothing to the imagination. For a fleeting moment he imagined Sophia in his embrace and then he calmed down.

That was in his brain. This was Ana.

Chapter 24: Struggling

It was early when Bridget arrived at the office. She found Seb on the couch against the wall, a cup of coffee in his hands, his eyes red.
“Seb, what’s wrong? Is it Ana?” she asked worried and sat down next to him.
“Non… I…” he sighed. “I made a mess of things, Bridget. And I needed to talk to someone, but…”
“You know you can trust me.” She said softly.
Seb smiled sadly. “I can’t forget about her… The woman I met during my honeymoon…”
“Sylvia…”
“Sophia. Sophia Garner.” He looked at his hands. “And I have hurt her so much. I broke her heart when I told her I was married.”
Bridget lay her hand on his arm. “Seb… If you really love her, you can find her. You can go back there and look for her.”

“When I make love to Ana, I see Sophia’s face. I wished it was her in my arms. I know that sounds so cruel, but I can’t help it. Of course I love Ana and I care for her, but…” he bit his lip.
“But you love her like a sister.” Bridget stated.
He nodded. “Oui. I’m pathetic.”
“No, you’re not. Trust me, Seb. Everything will work out in the end.” She smiled.
“I hope you’re right.” He looked at her. “Please don’t tell any of the others about this.”
“Of course not!” she shook her head.
He kissed her cheek. “You’re a good friend, Bridget.”
“Thanks.” She blushed.

“How are you things between you and Urs?” he asked.
“We’re getting there. But we are taking it easy.” She said softly.
“I’m glad.” Seb saw she was struggling with her feelings. “You’ve been through a lot, haven’t you?”
Bridget shrugged. “We all have.”
“I’m here if you need a friend. I mean… We always complain to you, but… I think you have things bottled up as well. And if you want someone to listen to you… Just say the word.” He squeezed her hand.
“Thanks, Seb.” She smiled and gave him a hug. “And things will work out for you too.”

The door had just closed behind David when Lorna’s phone rang. The memories of their love making still lingered in her mind, and she smiled when she answered it.
“Hi Jamie!”
“What do you think you are doing?” her brother asked angrily.
“Sorry? What do you mean?”
“How can you go out with that Miller guy?” he snapped.
“Don’t start, Jamie. I love him and there is nothing you can do about it.” Lorna said.
“Don’t put your money on it. I want you to break up with him.” Jamie said.
She shook her head. “Never.”
“You don’t want him to get hurt do you? Or his family?” Daniel, her other brother, asked.
“Not you too.” Lorna sighed.
“You’re breaking up with him right now. Otherwise the Millers’ stables might caught fire.” Daniel threatened.
“Don’t you dare!” she yelled.
“You know what to do.” Jamie said and hung up.

Lorna sank to the floor and sobbed. This couldn’t be true. How could they do that to her? She loved David with all her heart. But she couldn’t let him suffer.

“But we are having lunch at my mothers’ tomorrow.” Sabrina nagged.
“I’m sorry, querida, but it’s my job.” Carlos sighed.
“It’s mother’s day!” she threw her hands in the air.
“You think I don’t know that? My mother is in Spain!” he snapped.

Sabrina angrily turned around and slammed the door behind her. Carlos clutched his fists. Sometimes he wondered if he should go on with the whole thing. All they did was fight lately, and he couldn’t take it anymore. And having Ulva around didn’t make things easier.

“Morning.” Urs winked at Bridget.
“Good morning.” She answered him.
“Bonjour Urs.” Seb shook his hand.
Urs frowned. “You’re early!”
“I know.” Seb shrugged. “I had some things to discuss.”

“Morning, buddies!” David ran in. “I’m not too late am I?”
Bridget laughed. “No, you’re not. Carlos isn’t here yet and Simon is stuck in traffic, so...”
“Good!” he sank down next to Seb when his mobile rang. “You already miss me?” he grinned.

“I’m sorry, David. I can’t go through with it.” Lorna said softly.
“You can’t go through with what?” he asked puzzled.
“Us. I… I have to break up with you. I’m so sorry.”
“What? Why???” he jumped up and the others looked worried at him.
“Because… It’s not right and… I’m sorry, David.” A sob escaped her and she hung up.
“Lorna? Lorna!” he redialled her number, but got her voicemail. “Damn it!”

“David, what’s wrong?” Urs asked concerned.
“Tell Simon I had to go!” he ran out of the room, leaving the others confused and worried.
“What was all that about?” Seb asked.
Bridget shook her head. “It didn’t sound good.”

Chapter 25: Dinner

When the guys were about to leave, Bridget stopped Urs. “Do you have a minute?”
“Of course.” He smiled.
Seb winked before he closed the door behind him. “A demain!”

Bridget took a deep breath. “The institution where you are performing tomorrow… My mother is there.”
“I thought so.” Urs nodded.
“Oh?”
“You dropped your coffee when Simon mentioned that performance. And then you told me about your mother. So I put those two together and…” he shrugged.
“Right. Well ehm… I’ll be there too. But I’m… What will the guys…” she sighed.

Urs pulled her from her chair and held her in his arms. “They are not going to say a word. Don’t worry about that.”
“You’re the only one who knows.” She whispered.
“I know, sweetie.” He kissed her forehead. “I would like to meet your mother, if that’s ok with you.”
Bridget looked at him. “I don’t know how she’ll react.”
“I can handle it.” He said.
“Ok. I’ll introduce you.”
Urs kissed her tenderly. “I have to go now. But maybe we can do something after the performance tomorrow.”
“That would be nice.” She nodded.

Bridget browsed the internet after the guys had left. When she found what she was looking for, she gasped.

High Land Enterprises has become one of the major stockholders of Sony. After long negotiations Sophia Garner and Tom Brady succeed in their goal.

Bridget read on and was surprised. It looked like Sophia was a very wealthy woman.

High Land Enterprises is the result of a merge between High Ridge Enterprise and Sound Land L.L.P. Ms Garner took the lead of Sound Land L.L.P. after her father died a few weeks ago.

Bridget wrote down the email address and phone number she found. Maybe she should inquier a little.
After a few phone calls, she found out what she wanted to know. But should she tell Seb?

She was startled by a knock on the door.
“Mike?”
“Hi, Bridget.” He smiled. “I was wondering… Can I take you out to dinner tonight?”
Bridget took a deep breath. “I think you’re great, Mike, but I’m not interested in a relationship.”
“I guess Mr Bühler beat me.” He said cynical.
She nodded. “I’m sorry.”
Mike didn’t say a word. He just turned around and slammed the door.

David was devastated. He couldn’t reach Lorna. Every time he called her, he got her voicemail. He went over there, but the doorman told him she had left and he didn’t know when she would be back.

Seb got home and was greeted with candle lights in the dining room. Soft music was playing and he found a note on the table.
“Help yourself. I’ll be right there. Ana.”

He took one of the meatballs of the plate and tasted it. It sure was good. When the door opened, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. There was Ana… Dressed in a black negligee. He had never seen her like that, and he had never imagined that she was the type for that kind of lingerie.

Seb swallowed but started to choke. Ana quickly came over and thumbed his back. The meatball flew out of his mouth and hit the wall.
“Mon Dieu…” he whispered. “Are you trying to kill me?”
“I’m sorry… I thought…” Ana looked at her feet. “I just wanted to thank you and…”
Seb gathered her in his arms. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I do. You’re doing so much for me. I…”
“Ana, please…” he kissed the top of her head. “Don’t mention it. Let’s eat.”

Dinner was great. Seb had a hard time concentrating on his plate. Ana sat in front of him and his eyes wandered of to her cleavage every time she moved.
“You want to dance?” he asked after they finished dessert.
She nodded. “That would be great.”

Seb held her close while they swayed to the music. His hands stroked her back and she leaned into his touch. For a moment she was able to forget her illness. She enjoyed being close to the man she loved. She looked up and met Seb’s eyes. His smile went straight to her heart and she couldn’t help but kiss him.

Ana deepened the kiss and felt Seb respond to her. He guided her to the couch and when her knees hit the edge, she fell down. Seb followed her. His hands roamed her body and within minutes they were making love.

Ana felt amazing. Her body responded to Seb’s touch and he treated her like a real woman. Afterwards she dozed off in his arms. Seb picked her up and carried her to the bedroom. He tucked her in and for a minute he just starred at her. What was he doing? He felt so guilty, like he had cheated on Sophia. Sophia…

Seb went to the living room and poured himself a large glass of whisky. He sat down by the window and starred at the picture in his hand. “Sophia… What have I done?”
Tears streamed down his face as he thought about the woman he loved. He loved her but he had hurt her. And he was lying to Ana. How was he ever gonna sort out this mess?

Chapter 26: Life is too short to fight

Ana swung her legs over the edge of the bed. She tried to get up but everything went black. Seb came in from the bathroom and saw her fall. “Ana!”
He gently put her back in bed and pulled out his mobile to call the doctor.

“Seb…” she whispered after a few minutes.
“I’m here, Chérie. The doctor is on his way.” He stroked her cheek.
“I’m fine. I…” Her face clouded and Seb saw she was in pain.
He swallowed. “Don’t talk, Chérie. You need your strength.”

When the doctor arrived, Seb called Bridget.
“Ana collapsed. Can you find someone to stay with her while we are performing?” he asked.
“Of course. Don’t worry about a thing.” She said. “I’ll send a car over to pick you up at 1h30.”
“Merci, Bridget.”

The doctor closed the bedroom door and looked serious at Seb. “I gave her something for the pain. I think she must have been in pain for a few days. Mr Izambard…” he hesitated.
“I know. It will be over soon.” Seb said quietly.
The doctor nodded. “Yes. I’m sorry.”

He sighed when he went back in and sat on the edge of the bed. Ana opened her eyes for a second and smiled before drifting off again.
“You should have told me…” Seb whispered.

David paced the street in front of Lorna’s building. He was trying to come up with something he could say to the doorman, when Lorna came out.
“Lorna!” he ran to her.
She looked shocked. “David…”
He took her hands. “Tell me what’s going on? Why are you doing this? I love you and I know you love me too.”
“Don’t do this, David. Please.” Tears ran down her face.
“Talk to me, Babe. Tell me what happened.” He said, gently touching her cheek.

Lorna broke down and started to sob. David gathered her in his arms. “What is it, sweetie?”
“I had to do it… My brothers… They will ruin your family…” she whispered.
“What?”
“If I keep seeing you, they will burn the stables down or hurt your family. I’m sorry, David. It’s the only way.” She choked out.
“Why do they hate us so much, Lorna?” he asked.

She sighed. “When we were little, your parents owned our house. We couldn’t keep up with the payments, and your father threatened to kick us out. Luckily a wealthy relative died and he left us money and his properties. So we were ok. My parents send me to Switzerland because they wanted me to get a good education. And then they bought the house. And now your parents think we are snobby.”

She looked at him. “We are not, David. We are normal people who were lucky to get some money. But your parents can’t stand the fact that we now have more money then they do. That’s why your dad fired my brothers.”

“He fired your brothers? I didn’t know that.” David said.
“Yeah… That’s why they are so angry. And I don’t want you to get hurt.” She said softly.
David hugged her. “I don’t want to loose you because of a stupid feud. There must be a way…”
“I love you, David, but…”

David kissed her to shut her up. Her arms crept around his neck and they stood there, lost in that one kiss.
“I’ll think about this. And I’ll come up with a solution. But I’m not breaking up with you.” He said softly.

“I have to go now.” Carlos stood up.
“Dessert hasn’t been served yet.” Sabrina said.
“I have a performance in an hour, querida. You know that.” He wanted to kiss her, but she turned her head.
“Fine. Just go.”

Carlos sighed. He was getting fed up with her behaviour, but he didn’t want to fight in front of her parents.
“I’ll see you tonight.” He squeezed her shoulder.
“Maybe.” She mumbled.

He took his jacket and slammed the front door. When he got in the car, he was still fuming.
“You ok, Carlos?” David asked.
“Women!” he grumbled.
“Talking about women… where is Bridget?” Seb asked.
“She’s already at the institution.” Urs said.
Seb noticed the look on his face, but didn’t ask more. He felt Urs was hiding something, but he knew better then to interfere. And he already had enough to think about.

Chapter 27: “Mama”

The guys arrived at the institution and the director welcomed them. He brought them to the large garden. A small stage was set up and chairs were spread over the lawn.
Bridget waited for them. “Hi guys.”
Urs noticed her nervousness. “You ok?” he whispered.
She nodded, but he knew she was pretending to be braver then she was.

“So we end with ‘Mama’?” David asked.
“If it’s ok for you guys.” Bridget nodded.
“Of course.” Seb smiled. “It’s mothers day, so I think that would be perfect.”
“I’ll announce you then, gentlemen.” The director smiled and stepped on the stage.

“See you later, guys.” Bridget waved.
Urs watched her as she walked to one of the ladies. She sat down next to her and smiled at her, but the lady didn’t react. He felt his heart twitch. He couldn’t imagine what it was like to have a mother who didn’t recognise him.
“Urs?” David softly nudged him. “It’s time.”
“Ja…” he took a deep breath and concentrated.

During the performance, Bridget looked at her mother. She was smiling and seemed to enjoy the concert. The other residents seemed happy as well. The guys did a good job. The applause they got was rewarding and they felt that the people had liked it.

Bridget stopped them when they got off stage. “Guys, can I introduce you to someone?”
“Of course.” David nodded.
She brought them to her mother. “Mum, this is Il Divo. David, Carlos, Urs and Seb. Guys, I’d like you to meet Helena Mason, my mother.”
Urs took her hand and kissed it. “It’s nice to meet you, Ms Mason.”
The others were shocked after Bridget’s words, but quickly composed themselves. They all shook her mother’s hand.

“That was a beautiful song, ‘Mama’.” She said. “You must really love your mothers.”
“We do.” Seb nodded.
“My daughter doesn’t love me. She put me here but never comes to visit.” Helena said sadly.
Bridget gasped and couldn’t hold back her tears. She turned around and ran away.

She ran through the gardens when 2 strong arms grabbed her and took her in his arms. She sobbed and sobbed and for the first time in years she allowed someone to comfort her. Urs held her tight, whispering words of comfort.

“I ruined your shirt.” She whispered when she finally calmed down. She touched the wet spot on his shirt.
Urs tucked her hair behind her ear. “That’s the least of my worries.”
“And the guys… Oh God… They must think…”
“Liebling… Don’t worry about that. They will not say a word. They’re all worried about you.” Urs stroked her back.
“It’s so hard. I try to come every week, but…” she bit her lips, trying not to cry again.
He wrapped his arms around her once again. “I know, Sweetie.”

Seb softly approached them. He hesitated, but Urs nodded that it was ok to come over. Seb gently stroked her back. “Chérie… She didn’t mean it.”
“I’m sorry, Seb. I thought…” she looked at him, her eyes puffy and red.
“It’s ok. We understand.” He smiled.
She shook her head. ”I’m so ashamed. What will the others say?”
“You have nothing to be ashamed about.” Urs said. “Come on, we’ll take you home.”
“No! I…” she look bewildered.
“We’ll drop the others off first.” He said, putting an arm around her waist.
Seb frowned, but Urs shook his head. This was not the time to ask questions.

Carlos and David leaned against the car. David immediately hugged Bridget when she got to them. “You should have told us.”
Carlos nodded. “We don’t think any different of you.”
“Thanks, guys. It’s just… It’s so hard to tell.” She said looking at her feet.
David raised her chin. “We are your friends, Bridge.”
“Thanks David.”
“He’s right. You are always there for us. Let us be there for you too.” Carlos touched her shoulder.
“Thanks… All of you.”
Urs opened the car door. “Come on. Let’s go home.”

After they dropped off the others, Urs looked at her. “Why don’t you come with me tonight? You can stay in the spare room.”
She shook her head. “I’m fine. Really.”
“I don’t want you to be alone.” He said and took her hand.
“Urs, please…”
“I can’t force you. And I won’t. But promise me that you call me if you want to talk or…”
She nodded. “I will.”

Urs walked her to the door of her flat and kissed her tenderly. “Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?”
She nodded. “I’m fine. Really.”
“Ok. I’ll call you in the morning and we’ll do something fun then.” He winked.
“Thanks, Urs. For everything.” She hugged him and he wrapped his strong arms around her.
“You’re welcome, Liebling.”

Bridget closed the door behind him and sank down on her bed. She cried herself to sleep, not noticing anything around her…

Chapter 28: Love birds

Tom hobbled up the steps and paused at the door. He'd been married for a month and it still seemed so fresh, so new. Everyone warned him about the honeymoon phase wearing off and he was determined to not let that happen. He loved Sophia and wanted her happy. He wanted her, period.

He still couldn't believe he'd sprained his foot while jogging in Central Park two days earlier, but the doctor had recommended he wear a walking boot for two or three days and that it would be fine after that...

So here he was ringing the doorbell to his own apartment in Manhattan as he shifted the pot of flowers he'd bought Sophia, the Tiffany's box weighing in his coat pocket. He hoped she liked the surprise as he heard the doorknob turn and the old door swing open.

"Did you forget your keys again?" Sophia was asking as she saw the flowers in his hand and the smile on his face.
Her mouth went into a wide "Oohh" as she pulled his hand and brought him into the house.

"Yeah, well, I thought I'd surprise you." Tom managed to say before Sophia launched herself into his arms.
He almost didn't catch her, but he let the flowers drop, the box making a loud thump as he braced himself for her. Her kisses were everywhere as he tried to carry her to the living room, but his foot in the boot wasn't cooperating, so he gave up, using his coat as a barrier between her and the cold wood floor.

Sometime later Tom looked down as Sophia's hands played down his bare chest, a smile of contentment on her face.
"If that's what I get when I bring flowers, you'll get them everyday, sweet pea." Tom insisted.
Sophia just sighed. "If I get that in return, it's a your welcome, sir. And I'll be happy to oblige any time." Sophia finished, teasing his earlobe. “By the way... flowers turn me on.”
Tom looked at the flowers squashed beneath them and started laughing.

He groaned in pleasure when she continued biting his earlobe and pulled back. "Not on the floor babe, my foot is killing me," he groaned out and Sophia slipped out from under him and helped him up. Giggling they made their way to the living room, where the wide couch held plenty of room from the both of them.

Sophia had no reservations that afternoon as they made love, for the first time she felt like she could give herself completely to her husband. He'd shown her in so many ways that he loved her, that he would be there for her, that he'd never deceive her.

She thought of Seb for a second and before she could get upset Tom began to do wonderful things to her body and she shelved all thoughts of the man she'd loved. She hadn't really loved him had she? The question floated around in her mind, until she was consumed by the actions of her husband on her body.

There was nothing left to think of as she let herself go in the pleasure he brought her, the love and devotion he showered her in daily. This was her life now. This was her love.

Seb quietly entered his apartment and was greeted by Fran. “She’s asleep.”
“Merci. Is she in pain?” he asked.
“She’s been asleep for most of the day and the doctor gave her some morphine, so I don’t think so. But it will get worse. Are you sure you can cope with it? We can always take her to the hospital.” Fran suggested.
Seb shook his head. “Non. I promised her she could stay here. I can handle it.”
“Ok. You can call me anytime.” Fran picked up her jacked and squeezed his arm. “Hang in there.”

He closed the door behind her and went to the bedroom. A small light on the nightstand was turned on and lighted Ana’s face. She looked so peaceful. Seb kneeled down next to the bed and gently stroked her hair.
“Seb?” she stirred.
“I’m here, Chérie.”
“Hold me… Please…” she whispered.
He quickly undressed and got under the covers with her. Seb felt her fragile body against his and held her carefully. “Sweet dreams, Chérie. I’m here to take care of you.”

Lorna lay in David’s arms and stroked his chest. His arms tightened around her.
“I’ve been thinking…”
“About what?” she asked softly.
“Us. You do love me, right?”
“Of course I do!” She looked up and met his blue eyes.
“Will you marry me, Lorna?”
She sat up in shock. “What? But… We hardly…”
“I know that I love you and I know that what I feel is real. And it would solve everything. They wouldn’t be able to separate us then.” He said, softly stroking her bare back.
Lorna shook her head. “They will kill us.”

“No, they won’t. I’m serious. Sweetheart, I love you and I want to spend my life with you. Are you willing to take that risk?” he asked, looking intently at her.
For a minute she just looked at him, trying to read his mind. She saw the love in his eyes and she knew he meant every word.
“Yes, I’ll marry you.” She said softly.

David sat up and claimed her mouth. “I love you so much.” His hands roamed her body and he pulled her down with him. Their lovemaking was hungrily and afterwards neither of them remembered how they landed on the ground.

Lorna looked at the mess they made and giggled. “I’m gonna have to teach you how to clean up.”
“You can teach me everything you want, babe. After we go married… Tomorrow… In Scotland…” he mumbled in between kisses.
“Tomorrow? … But… Oh Davey… I need….” She couldn’t think clear as he showered her body with kisses.
“You need me.” He groaned and brought her back to heaven again.

Chapter 29: Fire!

Bridget woke up and coughed. Her head hurt and her mouth was dry. She felt so strange. What was going on? She coughed again and that’s when she saw smoke. Oh God no! She jumped out of bed, put on her robe and ran to the door. When she opened it, the smoke hit her in the face. There was no way she was gonna get through it. She closed the door again and ran to the window. She tried to open it, but there was no use.

The thick smoke was getting in the flat. Bridget quickly wet some towels and put them under the door. ‘Ok... think…’
She grabbed her mobile but it was dead. “No… Don’t do this to me…” She put her mobile in her purse and hung it around her neck.

The smoke was getting thicker. She heard windows breaking and the sound of flames that were trying to break through the walls. The heat was getting unbearable. When she opened the water tap again, nothing came out. “No!”

Bridget panicked. She ran back to the window and waved, desperately hoping someone would see her. Her eyes were burning and breathing was getting hard. The last thing she saw was the fire department preparing the ladder to go up.

Ingrid sleepily answered the phone. “Hello? … Yes, she’s a friend. … What??? … Oh my God! I’m on my way.” She jumped out of bed, put on some clothes, took her car keys and raced out of the house.

She ran into the hospital, straight to the reception desk. “Bridget Mason. She was just brought in. She was in a fire.”
The nurse nodded. “They are working on her right now. You can wait over there.” She pointed to the waiting room.
“I have to call her boyfriend, but I don’t have his number. Did she have anything on her?” Ingrid bit her lip.
“Your friend is a clever girl. She put her purse around her neck, so she had it with her when they brought her in.” The nurse handed it to Ingrid. “Would you mind signing here for acceptance?”

Ingrid signed the paper and dug into the purse. She found Bridget’s phone that was still on. She browsed the numbers and found Urs’. With shacking hands she dialled his number.
“Bridget?” his voice sounded groggy.
“No, it’s Ingrid. Her friend. Bridget is in hospital. There was a fire and…”
Urs jumped out of bed. “What? Where is she? Is she ok?”
“She’s at the City Hospital. They are still working on her.” Ingrid said.
“I’m on my way.” Urs put on his clothes and stormed out of the house. He knew he shouldn’t have left her.

With shrieking tires he arrived at the hospital and ran into the waiting room. “How is she?” he asked Ingrid.
She shook her head. “I don’t know. They are still working on her.”
He sank in one of the chairs. “I was afraid this would happen one day. I mean… the state that building was in…”
Ingrid sighed. “I know.”
“God, I hope she’ll be ok!”

Ingrid looked at him and smiled. It was obvious that he cared for her. “You like her, don’t you?”
“I love her, Ingrid. I’ve been in love with her from the first day I met her.” He admitted. “And I know that I’ll have to be patient, but I don’t mind. She’s worth it.”
“I’m glad she met you, Urs. She deserves a good man.” She sighed. “The only guy she has ever been with was… A liar and a cheater. She thought he loved her, but… Well, it’s not up to me to tell you all that.”
Urs squeezed her hand. “You’re a good friend, Ingrid.”

“No, I’m not. I should never have agreed on her staying there. I told her so many times that she could move in with me…” Tears ran down her cheeks. “And now she’s…”
“She’s stubborn. I tried to convince her to stay with me as well.” Urs shook his head. “Please, don’t blame yourself.”

After a while the doctor came in. “Ms Lopez?”
“Yes. How’s Bridget?” Ingrid asked.
“She inhaled a lot of smoke. We put her on oxygen. She’s fine, but just to be sure, we’ll keep her in observation for a few days.” He nodded.
“Can we see her?” Urs asked.
“She’s still unconscious, but I’ll take you to her.” The doctor said.

Ingrid and Urs quietly entered the room. Bridget was still hooked up to the breathing machine. Urs sat down on the bed and softly caressed her cheek. He sighed. He was falling madly in love with her. But would she ever let him get through to her?

Ingrid glanced at her watch. “I have to go to work, but…”
“It’s ok. I’ll stay with her.” Urs said.
She bit her lip. “Are you sure? I mean… I guess you have things to do too…”
“I’ll arrange it. I’m not leaving her.” He said softly.
“Ok. I’ll be back later.” Ingrid nodded.

When Bridget woke up, her head hurt. She felt someone caressing her cheek and she slowly opened her eyes, looking straight into Urs’ worried eyes.
“Hi.” He softly said.
“My apartment…” she whispered.
“Don’t you worry about a thing. I’ll take care of you.” He said.

She pushed off the mask, tried to sit up but started to cough again. Urs put the oxygen mask back over her mouth. “Take it easy, Liebling.”
Bridget tried to fight him, but he was stronger and pushed her back in the pillows, wiping away her tears. “Please, sweetie. Everything will be fine.”
“I lost everything.” She managed to choke out between the coughing.
“It’s gonna be ok. We’ll get you what you need.”
She shook her head. “I don’t want…”
“Charity. I know. But you have no choice.” Urs said. “Try to get some rest now. We’ll talk later.”
“Simon…”
“I’ll call him.” Urs tucked her in and stroked her cheek. “And I’m right here if you need me.”
“Thank you…” she whispered before she slipped into a restless sleep.
