Chapter 45: Tragedy

The three days flew by and the guys had to say goodbye to their girls once again. Carlos and Cyd had signed the papers to buy the house. And the other three… Well, they had enjoyed the ladies’ company.

When they got back to the studio, Steve couldn’t believe the change. They were all happy again, joking and laughing, and the fighting seemed to have stopped.

“You know, Urs? I think you were right. Let’s just sing this song in English.” David smiled.
“Sing an E. It suits your voice much better.” Carlos patted Seb’s back.
“Are you sure about the English? Maybe we could try it in Italian…” Urs said.
“I’m positive. English it is.” David nodded.
Seb bit his lip. “Oui, but F sharp…”
“No, amigo. E it is!” Carlos said determined.

“You guys are unbelievable!” Steve shook his head.
Four pair of eyes looked surprised.
“Maybe you should send us home more often.” David joked.
“Don’t count on it! Next time I’m sending you to your rooms!” Steve laughed.
“We’re not school boys, Steve.” Urs laughed.
He shook his head. “No, that’s true. But sometimes you behave like teenagers!”

A month passed and the recording was going really well. The guys were excited and couldn’t wait for the weekend. All the girls were coming over and they would have 2 days off.
“Alright, David… If you could do your part one more time… I think we can wrap it up then and song number 5 will be finished.” The producer said.

Just as David was about to go into the booth, his mobile rang.
“Sorry, I got to take this. It’s my Dad.” He smiled. “Hi Dad! … What? … Oh God, no… When? How? … Yeah, I… I’ll be there as soon as I can. … Ok, talk to you later.”
“David, what’s wrong?” Urs looked at his friend who was pale as a ghost.
David sank down in a chair, his whole body shaking.
Urs kneeled in front of him. “David, talk to me.”
He looked up, his blue eyes filled with tears. “My sister… She and her husband died in a car crash.”

“Mon Dieu…” Seb squeezed his shoulder. “I’m sorry, David.”
“I have to get over there. The kids… They need me.” He mumbled.
“I’ll get you on the next plane.” Steve said, pulling out his mobile.
“We’re going with him.” Carlos stated.
Steve sighed. “I thought you would say that. Go to your apartments and pack. I’ll book your flights.”
Urs supported David outside.
“Someone should call Indre.” Seb said. “I think he needs her.”
Carlos nodded. “Si. Do you have her number?”
“Non. But I’ll call Lorna. She can tell her.” He said.

The guys went back to the apartments and grabbed their stuff. After Urs had packed, he went back to David’s. He found him sitting on the couch, starring in front of him.
“Have you got everything you need?” Urs asked.
“I… I don’t know. I…”
“I’ll take a look.” Urs said and went to David’s bedroom. His suitcase lay on the bed, but nothing was in it. Urs opened the closet and quickly took everything he thought David would need.
“David, where is your passport?” Urs asked when he went back to the living room.
“The top drawer of the cabinet in the hall.” He said.
Urs went to look for it and just then Seb and Carlos arrived.

“Indre is taking the first flight to London. She’ll board the same plane as we do.” Seb said.
“That’s good.” Urs said.
“And she would call Laura to tell her what happened. Just in case she’s trying to reach you.”
Urs smiled. “Thanks, Seb. I’ll call her later. When we get there.”
“Simon’s plane will be ready when we get to London.” Steve said while he walked in. “He thought it would be better to travel in private.”
“Great.” Carlos said. “Well, I guess we should be going then.”
“David, are you ready to go?” Urs softly asked.
“Yeah… I think so.” He looked confused. “My black suit…”
“I packed it for you.” Urs gently pushed him to the door.
“Indre…”
“She’s on her way. She’ll be with you soon.” Seb said.

Carlos looked worried at David. Just an hour ago they were all laughing and now... He shook his head. Just when things were good, something had to come up.

Chapter 46: Lost

It was a long flight to the States. David starred out of the window, not noticing anyone. Indre gently touched his arm when they had landed. “David, we’re there.”
He sighed and looked at her. “I…”
“I’m here for you.” She softly said.
He took her hand and they followed the others out of the plane.

Simon had arranged a mini van for them. The driver brought them to Danielle’s house.
David swallowed when he looked at the house. It was so quiet. When he usually came to visit his sister, they kids were playing outside. But today…
“You ok?” Urs asked.
“Yeah. Let’s go.” He slowly walked to the front door.

Richard, David’s father, let them in and hugged David. “It’s good that you’re here. Mum is in the kitchen.”
“Thanks.” David nodded. He went to the kitchen where his mother was baking a cake.
She hugged him tight when she noticed him. “Oh David…”
“Mum. I can’t believe it.” He whispered.
“Me neither.” She freed herself from his embrace and looked at the others. “Hi guys. It’s so nice of you to come.”
“Our condolences, Mrs Miller.” Seb said.
She nodded. “Thank you.”

David took Indre’s hand. “Mum, this is Indre. My girlfriend.”
“Nice to meet you, Indre. I wish that we could have met in more pleasant circumstances.” She shook the young woman’s hand.
“Yes, me too.”
“What happened?” David asked.

Richard sighed. “They came back from a trip into the city. It was raining hard and… They got of the road. The police thinks that an animal jumped on the road and that they tried to avoid it. They crashed into a tree. Danielle died at the spot and Rob on his way to hospital.”
Indre squeezed David’s hand when she saw the tears in his eyes.
“Where are the kids?” he asked, his voice trembling.
His mother sighed. “In their rooms. Steph cries all the time and Dylan… He refuses to come out.”
“I’ll better go see them.”
“You want me to come?” Indre asked.
“No, I… I need to do this on me own.” He kissed her forehead.

David softly opened Stephanie’s bedroom door. She sat by the window, a big teddy bear in her arms. Her eyes were red and her cheeks were still wet from crying.
David kneeled next to her. “Hi honey.”
She looked up. “Uncle David.”
“Yeah…”
“Mummy…” she started to sob again and David hugged her tight.
“I know, sweetie. But I’m here now. I’m gonna take care of you.” He softly caressed her hair.

After a while he released her. “Why don’t you go and wash your face? I brought some friends who would like to meet you. I’m gonna see how your brother is and then we’ll go down together.”
Steph nodded. “Ok.”

David opened Dylan’s door. He lay on his bed, starring at the ceiling. Loud music blared through the speakers of his stereo. David turned it down and Dylan looked angrily at him. “Leave it on.”
“Dylan…”
“Leave it on!” he came over and wanted to turn it back on, but David grabbed his wrist.
“I know you are upset. But your sister needs you.” David said.
“Leave me alone.” Dylan turned around and sat down on his bed, facing the wall.
David sighed. “Dylan, please… It’s hard for all of us.”
“Go away!” he yelled.

David hesitated, but decided it was better to leave the boy alone for a while. He closed the door and went back to Steph’s room.
“Are you ready, honey?”
She nodded, her teddy bear still in her arms.
“That’s the bear I bought you for your birthday.” David smiled.
“I called him Davey.” She said, her big blue eyes looking at him.
David swallowed. She looked so much like her mother. “That’s a beautiful name.” He took her hand. “Let’s go downstairs.”

Indre stood up when David came in with Steph. “You must be Stephanie. I’m Indre.”
The girl nodded and squeezed David’s hand.
“Indre is my girlfriend.” He smiled. “And there you have Seb, Urs and Carlos.”
Carlos smiled at her. “Hello Stephanie. That’s a beautiful bear you have there.”
“Uncle David bought him for me.” She said quietly.
“That’s nice of him. My daughter likes animals too. She has a rabbit, Donald. A real one and a stuffed one.” Carlos went on.
“You have a daughter?” Steph asked.
Carlos patted the space next to him. “Come and sit with me. I’ll show you some pictures.”
Steph looked at David.
“It’s ok. Go on.” He nodded.

Steph carefully sat down between Carlos and Urs, clutching her teddy bear.
“Where is Dylan?” Indre asked.
David sighed. “In his room. He’s really angry.”
“He’s grieving. Give him time.” She said.
“Is there anything we can do, David?” Seb asked.
“I don’t think so. I guess we should organise the funeral.” He said, looking at his father.
Richard nodded. “We already started, but…”
“And the guys need a place to sleep.” David bit his lip.
“We’ll go to a hotel.” Urs said.
“No, you can stay with us.” Suzanne said.
“Are you sure, Mum?” David hesitated.
“Of course. They came all this way. And we have plenty of space. You and Indre can stay here, with the kids. Or we could and you can all stay in our place. Or… I don’t know…” Tears sprung in her eyes and David hugged her.
“It’s ok, Mum. Don’t worry. We’ll get through this. Indre and I will stay here.” He looked at her and she nodded.
“Thanks. I better start diner.” Suzanne smiled bravely.
Seb jumped up. “I’ll help you.”

It was quiet during diner. Dylan refused to come down, so Suzanne brought his diner upstairs. Steph was just playing with her food and even David hardly touched it.
After they had cleaned up, Richard looked at the guys. “We should be going. It’s been a long day.”
The three guys hugged David. “You know you can call us if you need anything.” Urs said.
“Yeah, I know. Thanks.” David nodded.

When they guys had left, David took Steph to bed. He tucked her in and stayed with her till she was asleep. Afterwards he went to check on Dylan. He found him asleep as well.
He slowly went to the spare room.
Indre sat in bed, waiting for him. “Are they asleep?”
“Yeah…” He undressed, got under the covers and took her in his arms.
Indre caressed his chest. She noticed his breathing changed and felt his hot tears. “It’s ok, Babe. Everything will be ok.” She kept whispering soothing words till he finally slept.

Chapter 47: Grieving

2 days later, the Miller family and their closest friends gathered at the cemetery. David, his parents and the kids sat on the front road. Dylan looked angrily at the coffins while Steph clutched David’s hand.
David wore dark shades, but the guys could see his bottom lip trembling. When he stood up to say the final words, he kissed Steph on her forehead.

David took a deep breath and took a paper out of his pocket.
“My dearest Danielle and Rob… Thank you for supporting me all these years. Thanks for believing in me. There are so many things I still wanted to tell you. But I don’t know where to start. So, I’m just gonna read a poem. It’s called ‘Silent tear’.

Each night we shed a silent tear,
As we speak to you in prayer.
To let you know we love you,
And just how much we care.
Take our million teardrops,
Wrap them up in love,
Then ask the wind to carry them,
To you in heaven above."

When he finished, tears ran down his cheeks. He put his hand on his sisters’ coffin before walking back to his place. Indre took his hand and softly caressed it.

Urs, Seb and Carlos lined up and sang “Amazing Grace” while the guests put flowers on the coffin. David’s parents were both crying when they put a white rose on their daughter’s coffin.
“Bye sweetheart.” Richard whispered.
David led Dylan and Steph to them. Dylan looked at the coffins, threw his rose on it and ran away.
“Dylan!” David yelled.
“Let him go. He’ll be back.” Indre said.
David gently picked up Steph. Together they lay their rose down.
“Daddy… Mummy…” she sobbed.
David held her close while she cried and brought her to the car.

Family and friends gathered at the Miller’s residence afterwards. Dylan hadn’t returned home yet.
“You want us to go and look for him?” Urs asked.
David shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess he’ll show up again.”

Steph sat on the couch, her teddy bear in her arms.
“I think your bear would like a cookie.” Carlos said gently while he showed her a plate with cookies and cake.
“I want my Mummy.” She said softly.
Carlos said down next to her and stroked her hair. “You know… Your Mummy and Daddy will always be with you. They can see you from up there. And they will always be in your heart.”

“David, the lawyer is coming later about the will.” Richard said.
“Yeah, ok. Could you keep Steph busy?” David asked Indre.
She nodded. “Of course. Although Carlos is doing a good job.”
“Yeah… I’m so grateful to have such goods friends.” He said softly, looking at Seb and Urs.

Just then Dylan stormed in. He ran up the stairs and they heard him slam his bedroom door.
“Can I try?” Seb asked.
David hesitated. “Are you sure?”
“Oui.”
“Ok, thanks.” David patted his back. “Good luck.”

Seb knocked on Dylan’s door. When there was no answer, he softly opened it and went in. Dylan sat on his bed and looked furious. “What do you want?”
“I want to talk to you.” Seb said. “And I thought you could use a friend.”
“No, I don’t.” he snapped.
Seb sat down next to him. “You know, my father left me too when I was a child. And I was very angry. I still am sometimes. But your father didn’t do it on purpose.”
“We had a fight.” Dylan said softly. “And I said that I wished he was dead. And now he is.”
“It was not your fault.” Seb said.
“And now I can’t even say I’m sorry.” He added softly.
“I’m sure he knows.” Seb squeezed his shoulder. “Why don’t you come down with me? I think your sister would be happy.”
Dylan nodded. “I haven’t been very nice to her. Or to uncle David.”
Seb smiled. “They will understand.”

David looked up when Dylan and Seb came down.
“I’m sorry, uncle David.” The boy said and bit his bottom lip.
“It’s ok, Buddy.” David hugged him. “I understand.”
“Where is Steph?”
“She’s in the living room with Carlos. Why don’t you join them? Granny baked a cake and cookies.” David smiled.
Dylan nodded and went to join his sister.
“I don’t know what you said, Seb, but thank you.” David hugged him.
“You’re welcome.”

That evening, the lawyer arrived. Urs, Seb, Carlos and Indre took the kids to the living room, while David and his parents went to sit in Rob’s office.
After the lawyer read the will, it was silent for a long time.
“They want me to take care of the kids?” David finally asked.
The lawyer nodded. “Yes, you are mentioned as their legal guardian.”
“But I can’t… With my career… I mean… I travel all over the world.” David shook his head and looked at his parents.
“It’s your sisters’ last will, David.” His mother softly said.
“I know. I need to think about it.” He abruptly stood up and left the house.

Chapter 48: Decisions

It was almost midnight when David returned. His parents had gone home and the kids were in bed, but the guys and Indre waited for him.
“I guess my parents told you.” He said while he sat down.
“Oui.” Seb nodded.
“I don’t know if I can do it. The responsibility…” David shook his head.
“You’ll do fine.” Carlos smiled.
David looked at him. “I couldn’t even handle Dylan! Seb had to talk to him.”
“There will always be situations that will be difficult, but you can do this, David.” Urs gently patted his back.
He looked at the others. “And what about our career? The travelling?”
“The children will love it. And I think it would be good for them. Meeting new people, other cultures…” Seb shrugged.
“And what about school?” David asked.
“Maybe you could hire a teacher.” Urs suggested.

Indre hadn’t said a word till now. David looked at her with questioning eyes. “Of course I’ll support you.” She smiled.
“Even if I decide to give up Il Divo?” he asked.
“Que? David, are you saying…” Carlos looked confused.
“That I consider quitting. Yes.” He nodded.
Seb sighed. “David…”
He abruptly stood up. “I need to think about all this. I can’t decide right now. I’ll call Simon first thing in the morning.”

They all watched him leaving the room before turning their head to look at Indre.
She shrugged. “He’s upset. Give him time. I’m sure he’ll come around.”
“I hope so. I really hope so.” Urs softly said.
Seb stood up. “We should get some sleep as well. It’s been a long day.”
“Si. Goodnight, Indre.” Carlos kissed her on the cheek. “And take good care of him.”
“I will.” She smiled.

When Indre walked into their bedroom, David stood in front of the window.
“Will you still love me if I decide to leave Il Divo?” he asked softly.
“Babe! Of course I will.” Indre put her arms around his waist. “I didn’t fall in love with you because you are part of Il Divo.”
David held her close. “I don’t know what to do, Indre. I can’t take care of the kids when we are on tour. You know how hectic it is. Well, you don’t, but…”
“The guys are there and Cyd. And she takes Macy on tour as well, so…”

“I know, but Macy is only 5. Dylan is in High school. And every day another city… I can’t look after them when we have interviews or during the soundcheck or concert.” David said. “I don’t know what to do. I’ll call Simon in the morning. I can’t go back right away. There is so much that needs to be done before I can leave.”
Indre kissed him tenderly. “Let’s get some sleep, babe. It’s been a long day.”
“Yeah…” he nodded.

David took Indre in his arms when they lay in bed. “I feel so… I don’t know… Numb. Will you make love to me, Indre? Make me feel alive again, please.”
She softly kissed him. Their lovemaking was very tender and afterwards she held him till he was fast asleep.

The next morning, David called Simon. It was a difficult phone call and Indre heard him raising his voice. When he finally emerged from Rob’s office, he looked tired.
He sat down at the kitchen table and looked at the children. “How would you feel about moving to London?”
“Are we gonna live with you, Uncle David?” Steph asked.
He nodded. “Yes.”
Dylan just shrugged. “I guess.”
“Good. Well, I guess we should start organising. Why don’t you to have a look at what you would like to take with you? Clothes, toys and stuff…” he said.
“Can I take Davey?” Steph asked.
“Of course you can, Honey.” David kissed her forehead. “Now, go on. I’ll be up later.”

He turned to face Indre after the kids had left. “Simon is giving us time off till the first week of January. We have to go see him in two weeks to discuss our plans. Or mine.”
“Did you tell him you want to quit?” she asked.
He nodded. “He was furious at first. But then he said I should think about it some more and that we would talk about it when we saw him.”
“So, you are taking the kids to London?”
“Yes. I’m staying here for a week and a half to arrange everything. Simon was gonna look for a larger apartment in the meantime.” David smiled.
Indre swallowed. “And what will happen to us?”
He grabbed her wrist and pulled her on his lap. “I hope you will support me in this. And maybe you can move in with me? I’m sure you can get a job in London.”
“It may take some time, but…” she stroked his cheek. “I would love to move in with you. I just don’t know if I can take the responsibility for raising those kids.”
“Together we can do this. I don’t have any experience either, but I’m sure we will make a fantastic team.” He kissed her. “I love you, Indre.”
“I love you too, David.”

Chapter 49: Coming home

The guys and Indre went back home, while David stayed in the Sates to arrange the moving out of the children.

Laura came to the airport to pick up Urs, Seb and Indre.
Urs dropped his suitcase and gathered her in his arms. “God, I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” She murmured, enjoying the warmth of his body. She released him and looked at Seb. “Lorna couldn’t make it. They asked her to do an extra shift at the hospital.”
“Again?” he asked surprised.
Laura shrugged. “The flu is going around and a lot of her colleagues are ill, so… She gave me the key, so you can get in.”
“Let’s go home.” Urs said, taking Laura’s hand in his.

Laura dropped Indre and Seb off and drove home.
“Your hands seem a lot better.” Urs said after she had parked the car.
She nodded. “Ja. I’m getting there. Even the scars are fading a little.”
“What about…” he bit his lip.
“Playing the piano?” she shrugged. “I haven’t tried. I don’t think I could handle it if it wasn’t going like I wanted it too.”
Urs gently squeezed her hand.

After he had dropped his suitcase in his room, the two of them cuddled on the couch. He had his arms around her and she leaned against his chest.
“It’s so good to be back.” He said softly.
“It’s good to have you back.” Laura winked. “So, tell me what is going on with David.”
Urs told her the whole story. “So we have an appointment with Simon in 2 weeks.”

“And what if he decides to quit?” Laura asked. “Would you mind?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know. In the beginning it would be strange and I would miss the guys. But… I wouldn’t mind going back to singing opera. I always loved it, so…”
“The fans would miss you guys. A lot!” she said.
He nodded. “Ja. I know. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess.”

Seb waited in Lorna’s apartment for her to come home. It was already dark when he heard her key in the lock.
“Bonsoir Chérie.” He smiled when she walked into the living room.
“Seb! Oh, I’m so glad you’re here.” She nestled herself in his arms and he held her tight.
“I missed you.” He whispered.
She sighed. “Me too.”

He pulled back a little and frowned. She was pale as a sheet, had dark circles under her eyes and she had lost weight.
“Chérie, are you ok?”
“I’m just tired.” She said.
“You’re working to hard.” He stated.
She shrugged. “Yes, well…”
Seb gently stroked her cheek. “You have to take care of yourself.”
“I’m fine, really. You want something to eat?” she asked, quickly changing the subject.
“Non, I ate on the plane. But I’ll make you something.” He smiled.
“No, it’s ok. I ate in the hospital. Shall we go to bed then? I’m actually quite tired.” She sighed.
“Too tired for some cuddling?” he winked.
Lorna kissed him on the cheek. “Never.”

Carlos came out and was greeted by a hallway full of boxes.
“Querida?” He cursed when his ankle came in contact with a sharp edge of a box.
“Carlos! You’re home!” Cyd came running of the stairs and hugged her husband.
His pain was immediately forgotten. “Si. What is all this?”
She smiled widely. “I got the keys to our house. And I was hoping to move this weekend. So it’s good that you’re home.”
“Where is Macy?” he asked before kissing her passionately.
“She’s in her room. Packing her toys.” Cyd said breathlessly after he released her.
“I can’t wait to move. And to fill out the rooms.” He winked.
Cyd laughed. “Yeah, I know.” But then she turned serious. “Are you sure you want more kids?”
“Si. I love kids. I told you before. And soon David will be home with his nephew and niece.” His face clouded. “At least I hope he does.”
“It will be ok, Carlos. You’ll see.” Cyd gently caressed his cheek.
He scooped her in his arms. “I hope you didn’t pack our bed yet.”
She shook her head.
“Good.” Carlos ran up the stairs and closed the bedroom door behind them.

Chapter 50: Simon says

Two weeks later, Seb and Urs stepped into the Sony building. Carlos, Cyd and Macy were already there.
“Amigos!” Carlos greeted them happily.
“Hi Carlos, Cyd. Hello Macy.” Urs smiled at the little girl.
“Hi uncle Urs!” she waved. “Hello uncle Seb!”
“Bonjour Macy.” Seb greeted her.

5 minutes later, David walked in. “Hi guys!” He smiled, but they all saw he was nervous.
“Uncle David!” Macy ran to him and he scooped her up.
Carlos saw the confusion on Steph’s face and how her bottom lip started to tremble. “Hello Stephanie.” Carlos greeted her warmly. “This is Macy. My daughter.”
“Hi.” Steph said a little shy, looking up at the girl in David’s arms.
“I brought some games. You want to play?” Macy asked.
Steph looked at David. He put Macy on her feet again and stroked Steph’s hair.
“Go on.” He said softly.
The two girls sat down on the carpet and Macy happily talked to Steph.

“How are you Dylan?” Seb asked.
He shrugged. “Ok.”
“Do you like London?” Cyd asked.
“It’s ok.”
Just when David was about to say something, Simon appeared in the doorway. “Goodmorning all. And that must be Dylan and Stephanie.” He looked at the kids. “Right. Cyd, will you keep them company? Gentlemen, come in.”

David looked at Dylan and hesitated.
“Go on.” Cyd softly said. “We’ll be ok.”
He nodded. “Thanks Cyd.”

The guys sat in front of Simon’s desk and waited for him to speak.
“Do you like the house, David?” he asked. He had found him a nice house, not far from Cyd and Carlos.
“Yes, I do. Thanks for that Simon. Steph is really happy that we have a garden.” He nodded.
Simon nodded. “Good. So, did you make a decision?”
The others looked at each other. Simon sure didn’t want to waist time.

“I don’t think it’s possible for me to go on with Il Divo. I have to take care of 2 children now and I don’t think it’s a good idea to travel around the world. We all know how exhausting it is, so imagine what it must be like for them. Besides, I wouldn’t have the time to take care of them.” David said.

“I talked to Patricia. She doesn’t mind to take care of 3 kids instead of just one. I talked to a few private teachers, so we can hire one or even two. I will book 2 adjusting rooms for Patricia and the kids. One for Dylan and one for Patricia and the girls.” Simon said.

David shook his head. “Did you listen to anything I said? I can’t do it, Simon.”
“You have a contract, David.” He said seriously.
“Then sue me!” he snapped. “Those kids are the most important part of my life right now! They need me! I have a scared little girl out there, who is afraid that I will leave her like her parents did. And Dylan…” David shook his head.
“I understand, David. But be honest with me. Do you really want to give up Il Divo?” Simon asked.
David shrugged. “I have no choice.”
“Guys?” Simon looked at the others.

“You are not alone, David. You know that we are there to help you.” Urs said.
Carlos smiled. “Macy is going on tour with me as well. And she loves it. I’m sure Steph and Dylan will too.”
“Oui. Other cultures, other languages… It’s good for their education.” Seb said.
“But take them away from a steady environment? They already have gone through so much.” David sighed. “I need some time, Simon. I can’t go back into the studio right now. I can’t sing.”

“I understand. I’m not the bad guy you all think I am.” Simon winked. “Tell you what. I want all of you back in the studio the second week of January. Take a break till then. Go visit your family and loved ones... And David… I know you will be great father for those children.”
“Thanks Simon.” He nodded.
“So, do we have a deal?” Simon asked.
“Oui, merci Simon!” Seb smiled happily. “I think I’m going to Paris with Lorna.”
“And I’m taking Laura to Switzerland.” Urs looked at the others. “I’m gonna ask her to marry me.”
“I’m sure she’ll say yes.” Carlos patted his back. “Keep us informed!”
“I will.” Urs smiled.
“Right. Enjoy your break and get out of here. Oh and David… If you need anything, call me.” Simon said.
David nodded. “I will. Thank you.”

Chapter 51: Love is all around

Seb and Urs returned to Belgium the next day. They decided to share a cab, but Seb looked surprised when Urs gave the address to the driver.
“That’s not where Laura lives.” He said.
Urs shook his head. “No. I need to do something first.”

The cab dropped Seb off first and the two men said goodbye.
“Enjoy your time in Paris.” Urs smiled.
“I will. You too and… Bonne chance, mon ami.” He winked.
“Merci, Seb.”

Urs took a deep breath before he rang the doorbell.
“Goedendag, Mr Bühler. Mr and Mrs Meersman are expecting you.” The butler greeted him and led him to one of the salons.
Paul Meersman stood up when Urs came in and shook his hand. “It’s good to see you again, Urs.”
“Thank you. And thanks for making time for me.” He greeted Monique with a kiss on the cheek.
“You’re welcome. You made me curious.” She smiled.

“Would you like a drink, Urs?” Paul asked.
He shook his head. “No, thank you. Can I tell you first why I’m here?”
“Of course. Sit down.” Paul nodded.
Urs looked at the two people in front of him. He saw the kindness in their eyes and he knew that there was no reason to be scared.

“First of all, I want to tell you that I love Laura very much. I have never met anyone like her. So brave and sweet, gentle, kind, respectful…” he smiled. “I fell in love with her the first time I looked into her eyes. And that feeling has become so strong that it made me realise that I don’t want to spend another day without her. This may sound very old-fashioned, but…” He took a deep breath. “Mrs Meersman, I want to ask your permission and your blessing to marry your daughter.”

Monique stood up with tears in her eyes and took his hands. “I can’t imagine a better husband for her. You have my blessing.”
Paul nodded. “You are amazing man, Urs. And I know you will make her happy.”
“I’ll do my best.” He smiled.

Seb came home in an empty apartment. He frowned. Lorna wasn’t working today, so he had expected her to be home. He put his overnight bag in the bedroom and made his way over to the kitchen to start diner.

It was already dark when he heard Lorna’s key in the lock.
“Bonsoir Chérie.” He greeted her.
“Hi.” She smiled weakly.
“I thought you didn’t had to work today?” Seb kissed her forehead.
She sank down in the couch. “No, but someone was ill, so…”
“I made us diner.” He smiled.
“I’m not really hungry.” Lorna sighed.
He pulled her up and hugged her. “Go take a shower and I’ll get everything on the table.”

Lorna knew she couldn’t win, so she went to the bathroom. After her shower she pulled on her jeans and a sweater and walked back to the living room. Seb smiled when she came in. But before she reached her chair, she fainted.

“Chérie!” Seb took her in his arms and carried her to the bedroom. He ran to the bathroom and came back with a wet washcloth which he put in her forehead.
After a while she opened her eyes and saw a concerned Seb sitting on the edge of the bed. He lovingly stroked her cheek. “What’s your doctor’s number?”
“I’m fine.” She mumbled.
“Chérie, I’m calling a doctor. And when is the last time you had a proper meal?”
“Lunch… Yesterday.” She said softly.
“What? Yesterday? Lorna…”
“I did a double shift. Didn’t have time to eat.” She closed her eyes again.
“Your doctor’s number?” Seb insisted.
“Number 9… speed dial.” She was too tired to say much.

Seb called the doctor and stayed with her till he was there. He left the room while he was examining her and nervously paced the hallway.
When the doctor finally came out he looked serious. “She’s exhausted. She needs to rest and eat properly. She’s been tiring her body out. I’m giving her two weeks off to start with.”
Seb nodded. “I’m taking her to Paris. I’ll take care of her.”
“Good. Make sure she rests and eats. She’ll be fine then.” The doctor shook his hand.

Seb silently entered her bedroom. She had her eyes closed and looked so pale. It was like she sensed he was there cause she opened her eyes.
“Will you stay with me?” she asked softly.
“Of course, Chérie.” Seb quickly undressed and got under the covers with her. “Je t’aime, Lorna. And I will take care of you from now on.”

Chapter 52: Families

“Are we going to visit Granny on Christmas Eve, Uncle David?” Steph asked.
David looked at her. “Would you like to do that?”
She nodded. “Yes. Macy is going to New Zealand to her grandparents.”
“You like Macy, don’t you?” David smiled.
“Yes, I do. She has rabbits. Real ones! She said I could come and see them when she’s back. Can I, Uncle David?”
“Of course you can, Honey.” He tenderly stroked her hair. He looked at Dylan who was playing on his Play station. “So Dylan… What do you say about visiting your grandparents?”
He shrugged. “Yeah… sure.”

David sighed. Ever since his parents died, Dylan didn’t say much. He wasn’t so angry anymore, but it was still hard to get through to him.
And Steph… She always stayed with him. Everywhere he went, she went with him. Even if he was just putting out the garbage.
He wished Indre was with him. He couldn’t do this on his own. But she was still in Belgium. He knew she had applied in a few hospitals in London, but hadn’t heard anything till now.

“Are you ready, Querida?” Carlos smiled.
Cyd nodded, nervously swallowing.
The door opened and an old man hugged Carlos. “Carlos!”
“Papá.” He released him and took Cyd’s hand. “Papá, this is Cydalia, my wife.”
“Nice to meet you.” The older man kissed her on both cheeks. “And welcome to the family.”
“Thank you, Mr Marin.” She smiled.
“Call me Juan, please.”
Carlos smiled. “And this little lady is Macy. Our daughter.”
“Hello.” She waved.
“Hello Macy.” Juan smiled. “Come in, please.”

When they entered the living room, they were greeted by an angry woman. “Carlos Marin! How dare you running away to get married? And not even telling your mother! Is that how we raised you? You should be ashamed of yourself!”
“Mamita. You know I love you. But I had to do this. Otherwise Cydalia would have lost her daughter.” He hugged her. “But we are here now, so you can invite the whole family to come and see us.”

The woman looked at Cyd and finally shook her hand. “It’s nice to meet you Cydalia. I am Luisa. And who is that little girl?” she looked at Macy who was held by Juan.
“That’s Macy, my daughter.” Cyd smiled.
“A beautiful girl. Sit down, please. Would you like a drink? And I baked cookies. I think Macy would like some.” Luisa chattered.
Carlos smiled. That was so typical his mother. She couldn’t stay angry.

Seb gently shook a sleeping Lorna. “Chérie, we are there.”
She looked up and rubbed her eyes. “I’m sorry. I must have fallen asleep.”
“It’s ok. You need to rest. We won’t stay long. I promise.” He kissed her tenderly and helped her out of the car.

Lorna looked at the house in front of her. It was small, but very cosy. The garden was full of flowers. “It’s beautiful.” She softly said.
Seb took her hand and walked to the front door. Before he could ring, a woman opened it and hugged him tight. “Mon fils!”
“Maman.” He kissed her on the cheek. “Maman, I want you to meet Lorna, my girlfriend.”
“Bonjour Lorna.” She smiled.
“Bonjour Madame.”
“Call me Denise, please.” The woman smiled. “Come in, you two.”

“Would you mind if I took a look at the garden?” Lorna asked after lunch.
Denise smiled. “Of course not! I’ll join you in a minute.”
Seb kissed her and opened the back door for her, before he turned to his mother. “Do you like her?”
Denise nodded. “She’s very sweet, Seb. I’m glad you are finally dating a regular girl instead of all those arrogant models.”
“Maman!”
“It’s true. Lorna is so kind and down to earth… Treat her well, Sébastien, because that girl really loves you.” She squeezed his hand.
“Merci Maman. I love her too.” He smiled.
Denise stood up. “I know you do. And how could I not like a girl who likes my garden.” She winked before going to the garden.

“Oh my… It’s so beautiful here!” Laura got out of the car and looked around. “I love the mountains! And snow… it never snows in Belgium!”
Urs laughed and hugged her. “Well, I guess we’ll have to come here more often then.”
She nodded, her eyes sparkling. “That would be great!”

They heard dogs barking and Urs practically got run over by a large Golden Retriever and a small Beagle. He caressed them and looked at Laura. “This is Sepp and the little one is Beppi.”
“They are cute.” She smiled.
“If you like my dogs, I like you.” A man smiled at her. “You must be Laura. I’m Franz, Urs’ father.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr Bühler.” Laura shook his hand.
He hugged his son. “Great to see you again, mein Sohn.”
“Hallo Papa.”

His mother appeared on the porch, drying her hands on a towel. “Come in you two. It’s too cold to stay out.”
Urs hugged his mother and introduced her to Laura.
“It’s nice to finally meet you, Laura. Urs told us a lot about you.” Greta smiled.
“He did?” she looked surprised.
“Only good things, Liebling.” Urs kissed her forehead.
“Franz, why don’t you show Laura to her room? I’m sure you want to freshen up a bit.” Greta said.
Laura nodded. “Thank you. That would be nice.”

Greta smiled at her son. “A very nice girl, Urs. And she’s beautiful.”
“Ja. I love her very much, Mutti.” He said seriously.
“I can see that. So, do we have a wedding soon?” she winked.
Urs laughed. “If she says yes. Don’t talk about it yet. I’ll let you know when I proposed.”

Chapter 53: Diamonds

Indre waved when she spotted David in the crowd. She was so happy to see him again.
“Hi Hun.” he hugged her tight.
“I missed you so much.” She said softly.
He sighed. “Yeah, me too.”
“Hi Indre.”
When she heard the soft voice she looked down. “Hello Stephanie.”
The girl smiled and grabbed David’s hand again.
“She wanted to come.” David shrugged.
Indre nodded. She looked at David and saw the sadness in his eyes. She knew it was getting to him and that something had to be done. “Well, let’s go home then. I can’t wait to see your new house.”
“It’s beautiful. And we have a big garden. And Macy lives really close!” Steph enthusiastically babbled.

David dropped Indre’s suitcase in the bedroom. He heard her talking to Stephanie.
“Uncle David, will you read me a story?” Steph suddenly appeared in the doorway.
“Aren’t you too old for that?” he asked.
“Please?” her big eyes begged him to say yes.
“Alright then. One story and then you are going to sleep.” He followed her to her bedroom.
One story became two and a song before Steph was finally asleep.

Indre looked up when David came into the living room. “Just one story?”
He shrugged. “Is Dylan in bed?”
“Yes.” She nodded and patted the space next to her.
David took her in his arms. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
“Yeah… I think you can use some help.” She looked at him. “I know it may sound harsh, but… You shouldn’t give them everything they want.”
“They lost their parents.” He said.
“I know, Babe. But giving in won’t help them.”
“Steph is so scared, Indre. She follows me everywhere I go.” He sighed. “And Dylan… I don’t know. He hardly says a word.”
“Have you tried talking to them?” she asked.
“About what? Their parents? I can’t do that.” He said.
“You want me to try it?”
“I don’t know.” He sighed. “Can we go to bed? I’m so tired.”
“Sure.” Indre followed him upstairs. She knew she was in for a hard time and not only with the kids.

“How about a walk?” Urs asked after diner.
Laura nodded. “That would be nice.”
Urs’ parents smiled at each other. They had become very fond of Laura. She was all that they could wish for. It was obvious that she and Urs loved each other very much. And they knew that she would take good care of him.

Urs and Laura slowly walked through the snowed area. He had his arm around her waist and they talked softly.
“I want to show you something.” Urs suddenly said.
He took her hand and led her to a small bench overlooking the lake. The moon reflected in the water and the snow sparkled like diamonds.
“It’s beautiful here.” She whispered.
Urs kneeled down in front of her and took her hands. “Will you marry me, Laura?”
She looked surprised. “Urs…”
“I love you so much. You are my soul mate. You are the one that makes me whole. I want to spend my life with you, Laura. I can’t imagine not having you around.” He said seriously.
She softly touched his face. “Yes, I’ll marry you. There is nothing I want more.”
Urs tenderly kissed her. When he released her, he took a small box out of his pocket and gently placed a ring on her finger. It was a ring of white gold with a large diamond in the middle. The sides were covered with small diamonds as well.

“Urs! It’s beautiful!” She exclaimed.
“I’m glad you like it. I wanted something special.” He smiled.
“I love it. Thank you so much.”
Urs sat down next to her and pulled her close. “Do you think you can arrange a wedding in 2 months?”
“2 months?” she frowned.
“I would love to get married on Valentines Day. Unless you think it’s too much of a cliché.” He shrugged.
She shook her head. “No. I actually like the idea. Would you mind having a large wedding? I think my mother and stepfather expect me to invite some of their friends.” She bit her lip.
“Anything you want, Liebling. As long as we get married, I agree on anything you want.” He kissed the side of her head.
She grinned. “Be careful what you say.”
“As long as you don’t expect me to wear a red velvet suit, I don’t mind.” He winked.
Laura chuckled. “If anyone would look good in it, it would be you.”

When they got back home, Urs’ parents sat around the kitchen table. They looked at him and smiled when they saw the happiness in his eyes.
“We are getting married.” He stated happily.
“Congratulations, my boy.” Franz hugged him while Greta kissed Laura on both cheeks.
“I couldn’t imagine a better daughter-in-law.” She smiled.

Before Urs went to bed, he took out his mobile and to send a message to his three friends.
“She said yes!”
It didn’t take long before he got their answer. They all congratulated him and said they were gonna celebrate when they saw each other again.

Seb smiled when he read Urs’ message. “Urs and Laura are getting married.”
“They are? Oh, that’s great!” Lorna said. “I’m sure it will be an amazing wedding. They are such a nice couple.”
“They sure are.” He nodded. “I have never seen Urs so happy.”
“They belong together.” She said.
Seb pulled her close. “And so do we.”
Lorna smiled at him. “I hope so.”
“Do you doubt that?” he asked surprised.
“Not really. I mean, I love you, Seb, but… When you will be on tour again and all those gorgeous women are surrounding you…”
Seb interrupted her. “I love you too, Lorna, and those women don’t mean a thing to me. My mother was glad that I finally found a ‘regular’ girl.”
“Oh?”
“She never approved of me dating those model types. She always said they were superficial. And she was right.” He kissed her tenderly. “I can be who I really am when I’m with you. I don’t have to pretend.”
“No, you don’t.” Lorna stroked his chest. “I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone.”
“Well… I’m not leaving right away.” He turned her on her back. “So, let’s make the most of it.”

“Now that’s good news!” Carlos beamed.
“Hmm?” Cyd answered already half asleep.
“Urs proposed.”
Cyd looked up. “He did? Oh my… Another Divo wedding. But I bet it will be a large one.”
“You regret that we eloped?” Carlos asked.
“No, of course not. Being married to you is all that matters.” She smiled.
“I’m glad to hear it. Do I make you happy, Querida?”
She looked surprised. “What? Of course you do!”
“Good. Cause you make me very happy. You and Macy.” He kissed her softly.
Cyd pulled him on top of her and grinned. “Show me!”

Chapter 54: Christmas Eve

David, Indre and the kids were in the States.
“Uncle David, when do we open the gifts?” Steph asked.
“Tomorrow morning, Honey.” He smiled.
“Can I open one today? Just a small one?” she pleaded.
Indre smiled. “I’m sure you can wait till tomorrow like all of us do.”
“Please, Uncle David?” Steph ignored Indre and looked at him again.
“I guess a small one won’t hurt.” He shrugged.
Steph smiled happily and took his hand. “You can tell me which one I can open.”

Indre shook her head and she saw Suzanne looking at her. “He always gives in.”
“Yeah… I know they have been through a lot, but he shouldn’t say yes all the time.” Indre said.
“I know.” Suzanne sighed. “It’s not easy on you either. When was the last time you two spend an evening alone?”
“That has been quite a while ago.” She sighed. “But I understand.”
“You’re an amazing woman, Indre. Not many women would stick around. I hope David realises that. And if he doesn’t… I will tell him!” Suzanne stated.
Indre smiled. “Thanks. I love him, so it’s only natural that I support him.”
“That may be so, but he shouldn’t take your love for granted. And don’t ever hesitate to come and talk to me. I love my son, but sometimes he can be so stubborn!” Suzanne winked.

Carlos and Cyd had travelled to New Zealand to introduce Carlos to Cyd’s family. They had immediately accepted him and Cyd’s mother did nothing but spoil him.

Cyd stood in the bathroom and looked in the mirror. She had just been crying and now her make up was ruined and her eyes were puffy.
“Querida?”
“In the bathroom! I’ll be right there!” she quickly turned on the water and splashed her face.
When Carlos came in, he immediately noticed something was wrong. “Have you been crying?”
“Of course not.” She tried to ignore him and took her mascara.
Carlos gripped her wrist and turned her to face him. “Querida, what’s wrong?”
She bit her bottom lip, but couldn’t hold back her tears. “I’m not pregnant.” She sobbed.
Carlos held her tight. “Oh Cyd… We will have children. But we can’t force it.”
“But I so wanted… I thought… it would have been such a nice Christmas present.” She chocked out.
“My beautiful wife.” He tenderly stroked her back. “We will have a baby soon. Don’t worry.”
He pulled back a little and looked her in the eyes. “Te quiero mucho, Cydalia. Even if we would never have children of our own.”
“I don’t want to think about that.” She said softly.
Carlos kissed her forehead. “Freshen up a little and come down. Your mother’s diner smells delicious!”
“Ok, I will.”

Urs smiled when he saw Laura sitting on the ground, surrounded by his nieces and nephews. She looked so happy and more beautiful then ever. When she looked up, he saw the love in her eyes and felt his heart swell with joy. Soon they would be husband and wife and they could start their own little family.

“You are a lucky man, Urs.” His brother Christian smiled.
He nodded. “I know. I have never met anyone like her.”
“And I have never seen you this happy.” He continued.
Urs smiled. “Well, I have never been so happy. It’s like my whole life has changed the day that I met her. I really love her, Christian. Like I have never loved anyone before.”

His brother patted his shoulder. “Keep that thought in mind when things are rough. That is what keeps me and Ursula going. And one more piece of advice from your wise brother…” he winked. “Never go to sleep fighting. Try to talk it through.”
“Thanks, Christian. I’ll keep it in mind.” Urs grinned.

Seb smiled lovingly at Lorna. They just finished diner at his mother’s and it had been delicious. The last few weeks had been amazing. Seb had given Lorna a tour of Paris and she immediately fell in love with the city. His mother loved her as well and he felt so content right now that he almost wished this could go on for ever.

Except for Urs’ message on his engagement, the guys hadn’t been in touch. And Seb was happy with the little break. No obligations, no hectic schedule,…
But deep down he had to admit, he missed his friends. But they would be together again really soon. Laura had invited them all to come to the New Year’s Eve’s party at her parents’ estate.

“What are you thinking of?” Lorna asked.
He took her hand and smiled. “How happy I am right now. Being here with you, away from work.”
“Me too.” She said. “I wish this could last.”
“Oui. But we can come here more often, if you like.” He suggested.
Lorna nodded. “That would be great. I really love Paris.”
“I’m glad you do, Chérie.” Seb tenderly kissed her. “And I really love you.”

Chapter 55: Christmas Day

Indre lay in David’s arms, enjoying the warmth of his body and trying to catch her breath after their lovemaking.
“I love you so much.” He whispered.
She kissed him. “I love you too.”
His hands caressed her body, but before he could take it further again, Steph stormed in.
“Uncle David, uncle David! It’s Christmas morning! We need to open the presents.” She jumped on the bed and Indre quickly grabbed the sheet to cover herself up.
“We’ll be there in a minute, Honey.” he smiled.
Indre sighed. Sometimes it was hard to share him. Especially on a moment like this.
“Come on, Uncle David!” Steph ran out and they heard her running down the stairs.
“I’m sorry.” David gave Indre a quick kiss and put on his boxers and a bathrobe. “Are you coming?”
“Yeah…” she sighed and put on her robe before she followed him.

Downstairs, Steph was already unwrapping her presents.
“Merry Christmas.” Suzanne and Richard greeted the couple.
“Merry Christmas.” Indre smiled.
“So, Dylan… How about you start unwrapping as well?” David handed him a large box.
“Thanks.” He said silently. But when he opened the present, his eyes lit up. “A laptop? Thanks, Uncle David!”
“You’re welcome, buddy. You can keep in touch with your friends when we are on tour now.” He smiled.

Indre handed David a present as well. He gasped when he opened it. “Indre! It’s beautiful!” She had bought him the watch he had been going on about for months. “Thanks, love! But, I have something for you too.” He winked.
She opened the small box. “Oh my… David!” Inside was a necklace with blue sapphires.

David gently attached it around her neck. “It suits your eyes.”
Indre kissed him lovingly. “I love you, David.”
“I love you too, Sweetie.”
“Uncle David, come play with me.” Steph grabbed his hand and pulled him with her.
Indre sighed. ‘And there goes romance…’

“Merry Christmas, Chérie.” Seb whispered when Lorna opened her eyes.
“Morning.” She smiled.
“I have a present for you.” He handed her a small box.
Lorna opened it and smiled when she saw the key that was in it. “A key?”
Seb nodded. “To my apartment. So you can come whenever you want. If you feel like coming here when I’m on tour. Or maybe later… if you move in with me.”
“You want me to move in with you?” she asked surprised.
“Oui. If you want. I wasn’t sure if I should ask or not. I know how much you like your job and I don’t want you to give it up for me. But…” he shrugged. “Je t’aime, Lorna. And I want us to be together.”
“Oh Seb…” she kissed him tenderly. “I want to be with you too. Yes, I love my job, but lately it has been a bit much. And I’m sure I can find something here.”
“So… It’s yes? You will move in with me?” he asked hopefully.
“Oui.”
His long body covered hers and he kissed her so hard that it left her breathless. “You have just given me the best Christmas ever!”
“I bet I can make it even better.” She whispered while her hands teasingly stroked his back.

“I can’t believe our holiday will be over soon.” Cyd softly said.
Carlos stroked her shoulder. “I know. But at least we will be together. I mean, you are coming to Sweden with me, right?”
She nodded. “Yes. I think it will be good for Steph if Macy is there.”
“And it will be good for David to see that see is moving on.” Carlos said. “And Dylan seemed to get along with Seb, so…”
“True.” She sighed. “You think David will show up?”
He nodded. “I’m positive. He is a responsible guy and he will be there. It may be hard in the beginning, but we are all there for him, so…”
“You’re such a sweetheart.” Cyd kissed him tenderly.
“Don’t ruin my image, Querida.” He winked.

“Mummy, Daddy… It’s time to open the presents!” Macy came running in.
Carlos opened his arms for her and she jumped on the bed, nestling in between her parents.
“Did Santa Claus leave you anything?” Carlos teased.
“Of course! I’ve been a good girl!” she smiled.
“Are you sure?” he went on.
“Yes, Daddy!” she jumped up again. “Come on, I’ll show you!” she grabbed his hand and practically dragged him out of bed.
Cyd laughed at the sight. A grown up man, being dragged out by such a little girl.

On Christmas morning, the Bühler family went to church together. Greta and her three daughters all sang in the choir. During the service, Laura took Urs’ hand. She was moved by the music and he saw the tears in her eyes. Urs gently squeezed her hand. He felt more content with every passing minute. This woman was the one that completed him.

When they walked home, the snow was coming down heavily and the kids threw snowballs at each other. Urs had his arm around Laura’s waist and looked at his blushing fiancée. She met his gaze and smiled.
“You look so beautiful, Liebling.” He said softly. “So happy.”
“I am happy.” She admitted. “I love it here and your family is so nice. I wouldn’t mind living here.”
“Really?” he asked. “Maybe we could buy something here. A house to live in or somewhere we could come just for the holidays.”
“That would be nice.” She nodded. “And living here sounds great.”
“Even if that means you won’t see Lorna or Indre that much?” Urs asked.
Laura smiled. “Indre is moving to London anyway and I think it won’t be long before Seb and Lorna move to Paris.”
“Women!” he grinned. “I don’t know how you do it.”
“What?”
“Seeing things we don’t. You really think Seb and Lorna will move in together?” he chuckled.
Laura nodded. “Ja. They are crazy about each other.”

They all gathered around the Christmas tree when they got home. The kids played happily with their new toys and the adults admired their presents.
Urs handed Laura a black velvet box.
“Urs! You already gave me so much!” she said.
He kissed her forehead. “Open it.”
Laura opened the box and gasped. Inside was a beautiful silver bracelet. Three pendants were hanging on it. A heart and the letters L and U.
“It’s a charm bracelet.” Urs explained. “And for every special occasion, I’ll buy you a new charm. Our wedding, our first child, our second and third…” he winked while he attached the bracelet to her wrist.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you so much.”
“And now you have something to remind you of me while I’m on tour.” He softly said.
“I have you in my heart, Urs.” She tenderly kissed him. “I don’t need anything to remind me of you. But it’s sweet and I’ll wear it every day.”

“I have a present for you too.” Laura said. She stood up and walked to the piano. After taking a deep breath, she began to play ‘Liebestraum’.
Urs didn’t move. He couldn’t believe it. She was playing again. When the music ended, the whole family kept quiet. They all looked at Urs, smiling. He slowly stood up, his cheeks wet with tears. When he reached Laura, he hugged her tight. “This is the best gift ever.”
“I’ve been practising for weeks.” She whispered. “I absolutely wanted to play this today. The first time I played this for you, I saw how much it meant to you and…” Tears prevented her to say more.
Urs gently stroked her hair, holding her close to his chest. “Ich liebe dich, Laura. You make me so happy.”

Chapter 56: Party

“I’m ready.” Laura smiled when she walked into the living room.
Urs turned to face her and gasped. “Liebling! You look beautiful!”
Laura wore a strapless long white silk dress with a black bustier that had a small flower design underneath. Her long hair was curled and hung loose. Her jewellery was simple, but looked very expensive. Beside her engagement ring, she was wearing a black onyx pendant with long matching earrings.

Urs took her hands. “Mein Gott! It’s like you look more beautiful every time I see you.”
Laura blushed. “Thank you. You look very handsome as well.” She softly stroked the lapels of his tuxedo.
He tenderly touched her hair. “Did I ever tell you how much I like your long hair?”
“No.” she shook her head.
“Well I do. Don’t ever think of cutting it.” He tapped her nose. “ So, Mylady, shall we go to the ball then?”
“Yes please.” She nodded.

“Chérie, can you…” Seb lost every ability to speak when he saw Lorna in her long red dress. “Mon Dieu!”
“Don’t you like it?” she asked innocently. She wore a red halter dress with a teasing cleavage and a bare back.

Seb quickly gathered her in his arms and kissed her passionately. “What do you think?”
“You look good yourself.” Lorna straightened his collar. “A sexy Frenchman.”
“And I’m all yours.” He winked.

“I want to go with you, Uncle David.” Steph whined.
“I’m sorry, Honey, but it’s not possible. But you will have fun too.” David smiled.
“Please, Uncle David. I’ll be good.” She went on.
He sighed. “I know you will, sweetheart, but it’s really not possible. And Macy isn’t going either.”
She had tears in her eyes when she looked at him. “Don’t you love me anymore?”
“Honey!” David crouched in front of her. “I will always love you. But there will be times that we can’t be together. Patricia will take good care of you. Ok?”
She nodded, sniffling softly.

When he finally reached Indre’s apartment she was already waiting for him. “I thought you weren’t coming.”
“Family crisis.” He kissed her softly. “You look beautiful.”
“Thanks.” Indre wore a strapless knee-length pink dress with a black lace design.

“Steph?” she asked.
He nodded. “She wanted to come.”
“I’m glad you didn’t give in this time.” She said.
“Yeah well… she was devastated when I left.” David shrugged.
Indre smiled. “She’ll get over it. Let’s go now, otherwise we’ll be the last ones.”

“Querida, you look very nice.” Carlos whistled.
Cyd had chosen a simple black knee-length dress.

“Thank you, Mister Marin. So do you.” Cyd straightened his tie. “I must say that I have a good taste.”

“You certainly do.” Carlos kissed her while his hands stroked her back. “I love the dress.”
“I love the jacket. Maybe I can try it later on.” She winked and laughed when she heard him groan.

Urs drove through the fence towards the mansion. The driveway was lit up by large torches. Every window of the mansion was lit up and the house looked cosy and welcoming. It was like they were in a fairytale.

Monique, Paul and Peter Meersman welcomed the guests.
“Goedenavond, Mama.” Laura kissed her mother.
“You look beautiful, sweetheart. Goedenavond, Urs.” She greeted her soon-to-be son-in-law.
“Goedenavond. Can I compliment you on your beautiful dress? Mother and daughter both have excellent taste.” He smiled.
Paul Meerman kissed his daughter. “They sure do.”
“Hi Peter.” Brother and sister hugged each other.
“Urs. How are you?” Peter shook his hand, smiling.
“I’m good, thank you. I must say, the house looks really nice.” He nodded.
“Can you imagine what it must look like when you two get married?” Peter smiled.
Laura blushed. “I can’t wait.”

The ballroom was decorated with flowers, balloons and garlands. In the adjoined room, the guests could get something to eat at a beautiful decorated buffet.
Urs handed Laura a glass of champagne and kissed her cheek. “You are the must beautiful woman tonight.”
“Oh Urs…” she blushed.
“I mean it, Laura. I can’t believe how lucky I am. Having such a stunning woman by my side. And not only on the outside.” He shook his head. “You are so kind and gentle, respectful, sweet,…”
Laura put her fingers on his mouth. “Stop it or I’m gonna cry.”
“You’re beautiful even when you are crying.” He teased and kissed her forehead.

“Amigo, I believe we have to congratulate you.” Carlos suddenly patted Urs back.
“Evening, Carlos and yes… We are getting married.” He smiled proudly.
Cyd hugged Laura. “Congratulations, Laura.”
“Thank you.” She smiled. “I can’t wait.”
“Well, you are marrying an amazing man.” Cyd winked.

“Bonsoir, mes amis.” Seb and Lorna walked in, their fingers laced.
Lorna hugged Laura affectionately. “Congrats, Hun! I’m so happy for you.”
“Thank you. I can’t believe he really proposed.” She smiled.
“You’ll realise it when you are standing in front of the aisle.” Cyd said. “Do you know where you are getting married?”
Laura nodded. “Right here. We met here, so we thought it would be nice. And on Valentines Day!”
“Really? Urs, you’re such a romantic.” Lorna said.
“I do my best.” He smiled.
“He learned from the best.” Seb winked at him.
Urs shook his head. “Sorry, Frenchie… But we Swiss do know romance.”
“But you can’t beat the Spaniards!” Carlos chimed in.

The girls smiled at each other.
“So how was the holiday?” Laura asked.
“Seb asked me to move in with him.” Lorna smiled.
Cyd smiled. “That’s great! Well it looks like all our Divo’s are settling down.”

“Evening all.” David greeted them. “Sorry we are late. Family crisis.”
“No problem.” Laura smiled. “Are the kids alright?”
He nodded. “Yeah… I hope.”

After catching up, the guys mingled with the guests, got something to eat or made it to the dance floor.

Chapter 57: Old friends

“I have to go and greet Mrs Geeraerts.” Laura said.
“Good idea.” Urs nodded. “Can I come?”
“Of course!” she smiled.
They made their way over to one of the salons. The old lady sat in her wheelchair and chatted with some old friends.

“Goodevening, Nonna.” Laura greeted her.
“Laura, sweetheart! You look gorgeous!” Annie took her hands and Laura bent down to kiss her.
Laura smiled. “Thank you. I’m glad you came.”
“Me too. Herr Bühler, I’m glad to see Laura so happy. You really make her glow with love.”
Urs kissed her hand. “She makes me very happy too.”
“And I’m so glad that you two are getting married. I knew from that first day that you belonged together. You two make such a beautiful couple.” Annie continued.

“Would you like a drink?” a female voice asked.
When Laura turned around, she couldn’t believe her eyes. “Isabel!”
There she was… The woman that was still hunting her in her nightmares. The one that would never go away and had ruined her career that she had worked for so hard.

“Hello, Laura. How are you?” her smile was cold. “Are you playing tonight?”
Urs saw something wasn’t right. “Laura, what’s wrong?”
“I… I…” she looked at Urs, back at Isabel and ran out of the room.
“Laura!”

Urs ran after her, up the stairs to her room. He caught up with her just when she opened the door.
“Liebling! What’s wrong?”
Tears streamed down her face. “Isabel.” She whispered.
“Was that…? Oh my God!” Urs gathered her in his arms and held her while she cried.

Urs held her close, stroking her hair and whispering soft words of love and comfort. When she finally calmed down, she looked up at him. “I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t let her get to me, but…”
“It’s ok, Liebling.” He tenderly kissed her. “Why don’t you fresh up a little? I’ll ask one of the girls to come up and in the mean time I’ll get that woman out of here.”
“Would you do that for me?”
“Anything for you, my Love.” He gently pushed her towards the bathroom. “Go on.”

Urs went back down and ran into Seb and Lorna. “Lorna, could you go up and check on Laura? And Seb I need you to get someone out of here.”
“What’s going on?” Seb asked.
Urs clenched his fists. “Isabel is here. The one that broke Laura’s fingers…”
“Oh my God! Of course I’ll go up. Where is she?” Lorna asked.
“Second floor, right wing, third door on the right.” He looked around.” There she is! Come on, Seb.” Urs walked towards one of the waitresses with Seb on his heels, while Lorna went up.

Laura came out of the bathroom when Lorna came in.
“Are you ok, Hun?” she asked worried.
“Yes, I’m fine. God, why did she have to be here?” Laura shook her head.
“Don’t worry about it. Seb and Urs are taking care of her right now.”
“Good.” Laura smiled. “How do I look?”
“Like nothing happened. Are you ok about going down again?” Lorna asked.
She nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Seb and Urs stood at the bottom of the stairs when the girls came back.
“You ok, Liebling?” Urs asked.
Laura nodded. “Is she gone?”
“Oui. We asked her to leave the house and made sure that she actually did.” Seb nodded.
“Thanks Seb.” Laura smiled.

“I’m sorry, Laura, but we have to leave. Steph is sick.” David rushed to them.
“Of course. No problem.” She looked at Indre. “You’re going as well?”
She shrugged. “Yeah I better go with him.”
“Keep us informed.” Urs said.
“It’s probably nothing.” Indre sighed.
Lorna and Laura looked at each other. They both knew about the problems Steph was causing and felt bad for Indre.

“Miss Sharpe, shall we dance?” Seb winked.
“Yes, please!” she nodded.
“What about you, Liebling?” Urs asked.
Laura nodded. “A dance would be nice!”

“Senor Marin, I love dancing with you.” Cyd giggled when he twirled her around.
He smiled. “And I love you, Querida.”
“Shall we try for a baby again?” she asked softly.
Carlos pulled her close. “Of course. But don’t get worried if it’s not working right away. We have time.”
“I know.” She sighed. “But I so want it to happen. I want to have a child of you, Carlos. A little boy.”
“Oh Querida…” he gently kissed her. “Our boy will come. And maybe a girl too. But give it time.”

Urs and Laura were dancing closely together. She looked up at him and he saw the love in her eyes. “Stay with me tonight.” She whispered.
Urs gently stroked her cheek. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I would like to wait. It’s just a month and a half till our wedding. And it would make it extra special if our wedding night would be the first night that we spend together. Not only as husband and wife, but also as a couple.”
Laura couldn’t hold back her tears. “You’re unbelievable, Urs. Every other man would…”
“I’m not like other men, Liebling. And I love you so much, Laura. With heart, body and soul.” He whispered and held her close.

Just before midnight, all the guests gathered in the ballroom. The doors to the terrace stood wide open to look at the fireworks at midnight.
When the countdown started, Seb took Lorna in his arms. “Lorna Sharpe, will you marry me?”

Chapter 58: Happy New Year!

David stormed into the hotel room. “Where is she? What’s wrong?”
Patricia smiled. “She’s asleep. She had some cramps, but I think she and Macy had some candy hidden and overdid it a little. She’s fine, David. You didn’t have to come.”
“But she called me that she was sick and…”
“You know what kids are like. When they are sick, they need a little comfort.” Patricia shrugged.
“Yeah… I better go check on her.” David softly went to the bedroom.

Indre sighed. Steph had succeeded once again in tearing David away from her and their friends.
“How was the party?” Patricia asked.
“It was great.” Indre nodded. “Until we had to rush out…”
Patricia just smiled. She had tried to sooth Steph, but it was no use. She absolutely had to call her uncle.

David came back out. “She’s asleep.”
“Are you going home with me or…?” Indre asked, hoping but not daring to ask.
“Maybe I should stay here.” David looked into her eyes. “But I… You…”
“Just… do what you feel like doing. Or what you feel is necessary to do.” She said coldly. ‘I already got used to this…’ she thought.
Patricia saw the disappointment in Indre’s eyes. “Go with Indre, David. Steph is fine. She will sleep till morning. And is something is seriously wrong, I’ll call you.”
“Yeah… I guess you are right.” He shrugged.

Silently they went back to the car. They saw the fireworks and looked at each other.
“Happy New Year, David.” Indre whispered.
He pulled her in his arms. “Happy New Year, Hun.” He tenderly kissed her. “Let’s go home eh?”
“Yeah…” she nodded and lowered her eyes. “Although the evening is ruined…”
David raised her chin. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well, we were having such a good time at the ball and then… Because of nothing we had to leave everyone. And it’s New Year’s Eve… Our fist one together…”
“It wasn’t ‘nothing’.” David protested. “Steph wasn’t feeling well and…”
“There was nothing wrong with her. When she called you, you could have called Patricia and asked her what was going on. Steph is just… God, why do I even bother? My words won’t reach you anyway…” She sighed. “Anyway… I’m going home.” She turned her back to David and walked away.

David went after her and hugged her tight. He turned her to face him and held her in his arms. “Can I go with you? I want to spend our first New Year’s Eve night with you…” He kissed her fervently.
Indre wrapped her hands around his neck. “Let’s go then. But hurry up!”

Lorna starred at Seb. “Seb…” she whispered. “Are you serious?”
He dropped on his knees and took a small box out of his jacket.

“Oui.” She said, just when the fireworks started.
Seb slipped the ring on her finger and gathered her in his arms again. “I don’t think I heard you.”
“Oui!” she yelled before she kissed him passionately.

“Happy New Year, Liebling.” Urs tenderly kissed her.
“You too. And I’m sure it will be a happy one.” She winked.
“I can’t wait to get married.” He softly said.
“Me neither! Oh Urs… I don’t want to spend another minute without you anymore. I know it’s not possible, but…” She bit her lip.
“Why not?”
Laura shrugged. “Because you’ll be touring and recording and…”
“Maybe you can come with me.” He said.
“Maybe… We’ll see.” She hugged him tight and the two of them watched the fireworks, lost in each others arms.

“Happy New Year, Querida.” Carlos smiled.
“You too.” She nodded. “And let’s hope it will be a good one!”
“It will be. A new CD, a new tour, a baby…” he winked.
Cyd smiled. “I hope so.” She looked around and saw Seb kneeling down. “Oh my God! Look!”
Carlos grinned and took her hand. “Come on, let’s go over there.”

“Frenchie, I never thought I would say it, but… Well done!” Carlos slapped his back.
Seb turned around and smiled. “Thanks Carlos.”
“Congrats, Lorna.” Cyd hugged her. “Another Divo is getting married. Can you believe it?”

Laura and Urs joined them.
“Good for you, Seb. She’s an amazing woman.” Urs hugged him brotherly.
“I know.” He nodded.
Laura admired the ring. “Very nice. He has a good taste.”
“He sure does.” Lorna smiled. “I can’t believe he asked me.”

Urs called a waiter over. “We need champagne.”
When they all had a glass, Urs raised his. “To a Happy New Year and to love.”
“To love!” they toasted.

Chapter 59: Exhaustion

It was the second week of January when the guys returned to Sweden. Seb, Urs and Carlos were already in the studio when David and the kids arrived.
“Hi guys.” He greeted them.
“David! Hi Steph, hi Dylan.” Urs smiled.

They were a bit surprised that David actually brought the kids with him. Macy was at the apartment with Patricia and Carlos had told David that Steph and Dylan were more then welcome to keep them company.

“Cyd, can you give them a tour?” David asked.
“Sure.” She took Steph by the hand and Dylan followed her as well.
David looked at the others. “I’m really sorry, but Steph didn’t want to stay home all day. So I thought it was best to bring Dylan too.”
“This is not a place for children.” Carlos said. “I mean… You know how irritated we get sometimes.”
“I know.” David sighed. “But what am I supposed to do?”
“Let’s just see how it works out.” Urs smiled. He didn’t want to get in another discussion on the first day.

“Are you guys ready?” Per, the producer asked. “Seb, maybe you can start?”
“Ca va.” He smiled. Seb went into his booth and the recording started.
A few minutes later, Cyd and the kids came back in. Steph immediately ran to her uncle and sat down on his lap.

Dylan looked around in awe. Per noticed the look on his face. “You want me to explain you how it works?”
“Yes, please!” he nodded.
“Ok, take a seat.” Per smiled.
Dylan sat down next to him while Per explained how they mixed music and voices.
“This is really cool!” the boy said enthusiastically. “Can I stay and watch, Uncle David?”
“Of course you can, Buddy.” David smiled, glad to see that the boy finally showed interest in something.

“I’m hungry, Uncle David.” Steph said.
David smiled. “We’ll eat in about an hour, Honey.”
“But I’m hungry!”
David looked at Cyd. ”Can you get her something to eat, please?”
Cyd nodded. “Of course. Come on, Steph.”
“I want you to come with me, Uncle David.” She whined.
“Honey, I have to work.”
“But…” her bottom lip started to tremble.
The others looked at each other. How was he gonna handle this?

David sighed. “Alright. I guess we can take a break.” He took Steph’s hand and walked out.
“It’s gonna be a long day!” Seb sighed.
“If he keeps giving in, she’s gonna turn into a spoiled rat.” Carlos shook his head.
“Brat, Carlos.” Urs chuckled. “But you are right. This is not good!”

Weeks went on. The recording was going slowly. Mostly because Steph was always around and demanded everyone’s attention. Dylan was there as well, but he always sat with Per and didn’t disturb anyone. He had found his passion in producing and they all noticed how much he had changed. He was no longer the silent, grumpy boy, but he had opened up and he even looked happy.

David was tired and looked more miserable every day. It was the week before his wedding when Urs decided to go and talk to him. It was already late when he knocked David’s door, but he wanted to make sure Steph was in bed.
“Hi Buddy. Come in.” David smiled.

They sat down in the living room and Urs noticed the mess. Toys lay on the floor, chips and glasses stood on the table, clothes hung over the chairs...
“Someone should clean up.” Urs grinned.
David rubbed his forehead. “Yeah… I know.”

“David, you know that we all care about you. And we don’t want to see you unhappy or sad. But you do. I’m not here to lecture you or anything, but… You really have to get a grip on things.” Urs said seriously. “I know that you’ve gone trough a rough time and so have the kids. But you shouldn’t give in to everything they ask.”
David sighed. “I know I’m spoiling Steph, but… She lost both of her parents, Urs. And she needs me.”

“I know. And I’m not saying that you can’t take care of her. But there is a difference in looking after someone and spoiling them. David, we have a job to do. A lot of people invested heaps of money in us and we need to prove them that it wasn’t a waste. We need to get this album recorded as soon as possible. We have one more week to get it done. And when I get back from my honeymoon, we have another week to correct some things if necessary.” Urs looked at him. “David, we need you. We can’t do it all by ourselves.”

He nodded. “I know. I’m sorry, Urs. It’s just… I miss my sister so much. And raising those kids…” He shook his head. “I thought it was easier. It’s not like they come with a manual! And I miss Indre. I need her, but lately… It’s like… we’re growing apart.”
Urs patted his back. “She loves you very much, David. But she needs your attention too.”
“Yeah, I know. I’ll get myself together. I promise.” He hugged Urs. “Thanks, Buddy. You always seem to know when we need to talk or…”
Urs smiled. “I guess I’m good in reading people.”
